Clarke Auction Gallery Offers Prints and Paintings by G. Kneller, Wedsworth Wadsworth, and Others in Upcoming Online-Only SaleFeb 14, 2022 12:00 EST
German-born artist Godfrey Kneller studied art under Dutch painters Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in Amsterdam until relocating to London with his brother. Once in England, the established artist met, and painted the portrait of, Charles II. This experience caused Kneller to shift his focus, and he began concentrating almost exclusively on portraits. Kneller became the favored painter for the late 17th and early 18th-century English and British monarchs and their courts. His other well-recognized works include portraits of Isaac Newton at different stages in life, portraits of numerous members belonging to London’s Kit-Cat Club, and a portrait of Michael Alphonsius Shen Fu-Tsung. In the upcoming Online-Only Auction with No Reserve, Clarke Auction Gallery will present three antique G. Kneller prints as one lot. These prints contain the portraits of William Duke of Gloucester, Queen Anne, and Robert Earl of Offord, respectively. On each print, the subject’s name is displayed over their profile.
Also available in the auction is an 1870 scenic watercolor by American Impressionist painter Wedsworth Wadsworth. The landscape painting, having been signed and dated by the renowned artist, calls attention to a winding, flowing river that separates a tree-lined cliff from the hills seen in the distance.
