Doyle’s upcoming auction will showcase several American School pieces. An early-20th-century American School oil painting is highlighted in this late July sale. The painting, a portrait of Madeleine G. Barker McCarter (1867 – 1957), has been signed at the top left corner; however, the signature is unreadable, leaving the artist’s identity unknown. In the painting, McCarter stands before a dark, windswept landscape rendered in shades of olive green and mustard yellow.
Two 20th-century Tiffany & Co. sterling silver centerpiece bowls will also be offered. Both bowls are circular and have notches on the top rim. The smaller bowl of the pair measures over six inches in diameter and sits on three feet while the larger bowl has a round base. A late 18th or early 19th-century George III mahogany bureau bookcase, a mid-20th-century Moroccan Tuareg reed and leather flat-woven carpet, and a lot of 51 finely bound 19th-century history books will also be available. Abdoulaye Diarrassouba, also known as Aboudia, is celebrated for his multilayered art influenced by the graffiti and street culture of his hometown, Abidjan, Ivory Coast. His characteristic murals and massive canvases depict frenzied scenes with street children as the central subject. An untitled artwork by Aboudia is a key highlight of the upcoming Bonhams auction of modern and contemporary African art. In this piece, the artist employs unrestrained figuration to express the grinding realities of harsh neighborhoods in this acrylic, pen, card, and paper on canvas. Aboudia uses the term “nouchi” to describe his distinct iconography. Another radical work on sale is Alexander Skunder Boghossian’s oil on board painting from 1962. Boghossian created this piece a year before he commenced the Nourishers series. He blended African imagery with techniques inspired from Cubism. With biomorphic forms and black crisscross lines, the painting elicits elements from Konso funerary sculptures and wooden masks from African culture.
Nigerian photographer Samuel Fosso’s untitled work belonging to the 1970s Lifestyle series also leads the listings. In this black-and-white photo, Fosso and his companion are dressed in bell-bottoms, tight shirts, and boots, imitating singer Prince Nico Mbarga’s eccentric style. Fosso is best known for his self-portraits representing such laidback poses. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Bonhams.
In 2014, Richard Prince, who was well-known as a “rephotographing” artist, exhibited 38 “New Portraits” at Gagosian in New York. The portraits consisted of “celebrity” Instagram screenshots with Prince’s comments underneath, expanded and printed onto large canvases. The commotion created in the art community was both positive and negative, with even the original Instagram posters voicing both support and disapproval. One of Richard Prince’s untitled works from this show, featuring an Instagram screenshot with comments, is available in the upcoming First Open | Post-War & Contemporary Art auction at Christie’s.
The sale also includes works from the Collection of Margo Leavin, property from the Estate of Sondra Gilman, as well as from the Laura Lee Stearns Collection. Beyond Prince, featured artists in the sale include Ernie Barnes, Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Stanley Whitney, Lynne Drexler and more. There is also sculptural work by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Urs Fischer, Ai Weiwei, and more. View the full catalog and register to bid at Christie’s.
