Akiba Antiques to Offer Fine Art by Manuel Mendive, Jerzy Nowosielski, and Franjo Filipović

Manuel Mendive (Cuban, b. 1944) "Atardecer" Mixed Media Painting on Canvas

Contemporary Afro-Cuban artist Manuel Mendive builds multidisciplinary links between the past and present. Born in Havana, Mendive has roots in Africa’s West coast and remains connected to his Yoruba heritage. He has dedicated his decades-long career to showing the influence of African culture on the Caribbean region. One of Manuel Mendive’s mixed media paintings, titled Atardecer, will come to auction with Akiba Antiques this July. The piece from 2000 shows multiple amorphous figures dancing and embracing around a red-hued tree. This auction features other notable fine artworks from around the globe, including work by Polish painter Jerzy Nowosielski. Known for his Orthodox iconography, Nowosielski applied a more minimalist palette to the available work. A winter landscape painting by post-war Croatian artist Franjo Filipović is on offer as well.

Beyond fine art, this Blazin’ July auction includes a variety of antique and modern furniture lots. Among them is an Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman designed for Herman Miller. This original piece includes the iconic Brazilian rosewood and comfortable curved plywood shell. Its black leather cushions were reportedly inspired by traditional English club chairs and well-worn baseball mitts. An antique French mahogany and bronze writing desk, a French Empire-style gilt bronze table with a lapis lazuli top, and a three-piece set of medieval Spanish armchairs round out the listings. 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, Modified

The Ford Mustang is one of the earliest vehicles to be recognized as a pony car. With its long bonnet and short deck, the original fastback version became highly popular for its styling. A modified 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback is a key highlight of the upcoming Witherell’s sale. Lion and Unicorn’s Upcoming Sale Features a Rare Doulton Lambeth Lord Nelson Character Jug

Doulton Lambeth Large Stoneware Jug, Admiral Lord Nelson

When Royal Doulton started making Toby jugs featuring well-known personalities, the first character flask featured Lord Nelson to offer tribute to the naval hero. The upcoming Lion and Unicorn event presents a Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug of Admiral Lord Nelson. The available salt-glazed brown and tan jug features the bust of Lord Nelson. It has a ponytail handle and carries detailed medallions on his robe. The jug base bears the quote, “England expects every man to do his duty,” Lord Nelson’s famous line from the Battle of Trafalgar. Among other Doulton stoneware on offer, one highlight is a Royal Doulton Kingsware whiskey flask. The Fagin relief flask depicts the signature dark brown glaze seen on Kingsware pieces. These Charles Noke flasks followed Doulton’s rare manufacturing techniques and finish, which no factory could replicate. They were manufactured for different distillers, with the notable ones being Dewars, featured at the upcoming sale.

The auction showcases a series of Royal Doulton ashtrays, tobacco jars, and match strikers. These articles from the 1920s are sought-after by collectors. After its success with Toby Fillpots, Doulton introduced this series of utility ware. Harry Simeon, a notable Lambeth contributor, designed these ashtrays and other stoneware articles. Also featured is a Santa Claus character jug from Bairstow Manor, a Stoke-on-Trent-based pottery company. The limited-edition jug is hand-painted in bright red and gold. It features Santa holding a bell and a toy bag in each hand. Interested collectors can explore the entire listings and register to bid online on Lion and Unicorn.

From Olympic Rings to Gold Rings at RR Auction

Olympics, Ryan Lochte, Albertville

Unlike most Olympic torch relays in which the flame is passed from one torch to another, the Albertville Olympic torches of 1992 themselves were passed from one person to another. The number of torches manufactured for Albertville were therefore needed and made in much lower quantities. The Albertville torches are thus the rarest of the torches from the last 30 years, and examples are seldom seen for sale. There is one such torch up for bid, however, in the upcoming Olympic Memorabilia auction, offered by RR Auction. Other relay torches in the sale include examples from Innsbruck (1976), Cortina (1956), Tokyo (1964), and more.

Beyond torches, there are more than 50 lots of medals in the sale of all varieties (participation, bronze, silver, and gold). One such lot includes all three of the medals won by Ryan Lochte (two silver and one bronze) in the London 2012 Olympics. The sale also includes more Lochte items such as his gold Olympic ring and his Breitling watch. There are also personal items and skating suits from speed skater Dan Jansen, International Committee pins from the collection of James Worrall, an original poster from the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics, and more.
