John Richardson: A Scholar Collects

Stair is pleased to offer the contents of Sir John Richardson’s lower Fifth Avenue loft on September 16 & 17, 2020 in what will certainly be one of our most interesting ‘lifestyle’ sales to date.

With every room in his lushly decorated loft painted a different color and layered with a dizzying array of furniture, objets d’art, art and mementos, the home of Sir John Richardson was a temple to his fascinating life. Upon entering Richardson’s loft for the first time, Colin Stair remarked to himself “Pay attention…you will learn something here!”, and indeed the art and decorations represent a life well-lived in the company of artists, academics and bon vivants.

Highlights include the furnishings of Richardson’s bohemian interiors, works of art by Pablo Picasso and Mark Tobey, Old Master prints and drawings, sculpture, Neo-classical busts and decorations, as well as lighting, textiles, porcelain and glass.

This two day sale will offer a variety of property from the serious and academic, to the lighthearted and whimsical, in a range of values that will appeal to all collectors.
