As the auction industry prepares for 2022, Akiba Antiques starts the new year with its upcoming sale, A Golden Affair. The auction is set to take place on Jan 13th, 2022, and offers more than 700 lots of antique works of art, vintage watches, jewelry, and more. Live bidding will begin at 10:00 AM EDT.
A notable lot in the auction is a rare Chinese Cloisonné hardwood scroll table (estimate USD 20,000- 40,000), previously sold by Christie’s in 1983. On the top is a heavy rectangular hardwood plank with curling scroll ends. The late 18th to early 19th Chinese Cloisonné leg base makes the table stand out. The Cloisonne table features four reeded, straight legs. The legs have beautifully carved openwork foliage friezes. The openwork has cloisonne work with medallions dividing the colorful lotus plaques.
Notable lots for watch collectors come from Rolex and Cartier. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch is a two-tone watch with an 18kt yellow gold bezel fixed dome(estimate USD 6,000- 12,000). It also has diamond numeral hour markers and a black oyster dial. The gold hands are yellow gold. It is cased with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and is water-resistant at 100 meters / 330 feet. It has 36mm dimensions. The other watch is a Cartier Panthere(estimate USD 5,000- 15,000). It is an 18k gold watch decorated with a diamond bezel amounting to approx. 2cts. Among Fine art, Cuban artist Manuel Mendive Hoyo’s syncretic art takes the lead(estimate USD 500- 5,000). It is an acrylic painting on canvas titled “A la Orilla del Rio” (“By The River Side”). His depictions of female-like in this painting are inspired by Yoruba-Lucumi mythology. The focal subject, a woman is in a state of hybridity, she looks like a human and also an animal. A child climbs on top of her while the other is sucking on her multiple breasts. Mendive is a painter, performance artist, and sculptor from Cuba with African roots.
