Louis Comfort Tiffany was the founder and creator of Tiffany Lamps. He was also, of course, the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany; the founder of the world-famous jewelry retailer, Tiffany & Co. The intricately–designed Tiffany lamps usually came with a bronze base topped with a stained glass shade. Louis Tiffany intended to pay homage to the beauty of nature and thus designed the lamps resembling trees, with the detailed bronze bases, stands and shades representing the roots, trunk, and canopy. These lamps became the icon of the Art Nouveau movement. ‘Time Capsule Opened: Bass Museum’ presented by Hill Auction Gallery, includes iconic lampshades by Tiffany Studios, but the highlight of the auction is a 19 in. x 13 in. Moorish bronze prism table lamp.
Le Pho, whose painting is another highlight of the sale, brings Oriental artistry with the influence of contemporary Western art. The artist is known for his semi-Impressionist study of flowers and figures.
The auction also provides works by Pablo Picasso, Frans Hals, Albrecht Durer, and Sebastiano del Piombo. Frans Hals is known for his technique, which is characterized by unusually free and powerful brushwork. Among his notable portraits is an oil painting, a 17th Century Man with a tulip, which is among the featured lots of the auction. The rest of the auction includes sculptures, furniture, photographs, and more. To view the complete catalog and register to bid, visit Invaluable.
