In its upcoming sale, Auctions at Showplace will present a wide variety of fine art, decorative art, jewelry, furniture, and more. Among the top lots is a 1971 color screenprint of Electric Chair by Andy Warhol. This medium-sized canvas is one of ten color screenprints by the artist. An image from Sing Sing prison was first used by Warhol in 1963 when New York State had its last execution. The artist uses a secondary palette of lavender, acid green, and teal in the Electric Chair prints, which contradicts the pathos portrayed, even as other artistic elements support it. The silkscreen process imparts to the prints an impression of loss, disappointment, and emptiness through irregularities, blurring, and murkiness. Another notable lot in the catalog is a colorful acrylic on canvas by American Pop artist Peter Max. Vase of Flowers displays the Neo-Fauvist color style of the artist at his best. By juxtaposing diversity and harmony of colors, Max transforms a still life of flowers into a flowing composition. The offered piece is signed at the top left and is accompanied by an authenticity letter.
Other works of note in this sale include Pablo Picasso’s Colombe Mate, a 1948 ceramic work that shows a beautiful dove resting on straw surrounded by a red brick border. The rectangular dish of earthenware clay is knife-engraved in yellow, red, and black slips and partially glazed. Also available by the artist is Oiseau No. 76, a ceramic plate depicting a serene-looking bird in its center. Another key contemporary work on offer is Louise Nevelson’s Collegiate School, a 1972 sculpture. The artist’s work tended to be monochromatic and usually all-black, in a manner that transcended representations between objects and viewers. Bidders can also consider Michael Estes Taylor’s art glass sculpture from the Kanazawa Series and a Campo del Cielo flying meteorite sculpture.
