The upcoming Paper Jam auction, offered by Phillips, will present 60 works on paper from a number of well-known artists. Featured is a piece from Tom Wesselmann, a cartoonist and leader of the Pop Art movement. He was best known for his figurative work of reclining nudes using bright, bold colors. Wesselmann’s piece titled Beautiful Kate #13 will be up for bid. Another figurative work for sale is Orgy Study (iii) by George Condo, which shows a nude woman lying on a mattress on the floor. Her hand is reaching up, about to pull the shade. Condo’s style was noted for its absence of color and abundance of shadow in a boxed-in, artificial space.
Beyond figurative works, contemporary art will also be available, including a piece titled Sorcier + SI by Invader. This work shows two pixelated figures with dark outlines and bright colors. Invader is an urban artist from France known for his mosaics based on pixelated, 8-bit computer game art. Sorcier + SI is a sketch of one such mosaic. Other artists represented in the auction include Jim Dine, Tomoo Gokita, Eddie Martinez, Nina Chanel Abney, and others. View any of these lots and register to bid by visiting the Phillips website.
