A Marc Chagall lithograph will be available in Clarke Auction Gallery’s upcoming Fine Art, Jewelry, Antiques, Asian, & Midcentury Auction. Titled Daphnis and Chloe: Chloe is Carried Off by the Methymneans, this piece shows a vibrant scene with human figures riding horses and carrying war instruments. At the center, two lovers, Daphnis and Chloe, can be seen embracing each other amidst the chaos. In the artist’s later years, Marc Chagall found himself immersed in the literature of late antiquity. This lithograph is Chagall’s take on Longus’ story of Daphnis and Chloe.
Another lot of interest is James McNeill Whistler’s Nocturne: The River at Battersea. In the late 19th century, James McNeill Whistler developed a keen interest in small towns and oceans. Most of his black-and-white lithographs were inspired by the Anglo-Japanese aesthetic. 561 lots will be on offer in this sale, including works from Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
