Juan Gris’ City Life In Paris & Llewellyn Xavier’s Abstract Art Available With Avenue Auctions
Jan 05, 2024 19:00 ESTSpanish painter Juan Gris is considered one of the significant figures in Cubism, an early-20th-century avant-garde art movement. Born in 1887 in Madrid, Gris completed his engineering degree from the Madrid School of Arts and Sciences. Gradually, his focus shifted to art and he contributed drawings to local periodicals. Heavily influenced by artists Pablo Picasso, Jose Carbonero, and Georges Braque, his artworks were a confluence of Cubism, traditional naturalism, and abstraction. Gris’ watercolor on board painting titled City Life in Paris is a key highlight of this upcoming sale from Avenue Auctions. The work depicts the vibrant city life of Paris, the place that artistically inspired Gris when he moved there in 1906.
Another lot of interest in the sale is an untitled abstract painting by artist Llewellyn Xavier. Xavier’s artworks are characterized by multicolored pearls of paint applied on the canvas surface with special tools and techniques. The available artwork deploys a bright color palette, reflecting the artist’s pictorial style. Contemporary and 20th-century masterpieces rendered by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Li Volk, Susie Sharpe, and others are available as well.
