Fernando de Szyszlo, Father of Latin American Abstract Art, Headlines Upcoming Helmuth Stone Gallery Sale
Jan 03, 2021 13:00 ESTFernando de Szyszlo, known as the father of Latin American abstract art, was a Peruvian painter and sculptor who played a central role in advancing abstract art in Latin America. Szyszlo’s works combined the myths and symbols of ancient Peru with a colorful, non-figurative language. “I always painted the same thing… I don’t know what to call them anymore,” Szyszlo told BBC in 2016. The upcoming New Year’s Fine Art & Antiques Auction, offered by Helmuth Stone Gallery, highlights a large acrylic painting by Fernando de Szyszlo. Titled Camino A Mendieta, the painting is rendered in bright orange, red, and brown colors.
Another highlight is a print depicting a winter scene by Martin Lewis. A seminal figure in 1930s graphic art, Lewis is best known for his city paintings. Winter on White Street, the available drypoint and sand ground print, shows people walking on a snowy day. A Tiffany & Co. sterling silver centerpiece, a men’s gold watch by Patek Philippe, and several bronze sculptures are also featured in the event.
