Claude Monet, a founder of Impressionism, wanted to remain anonymous most of his life and just paint. As a budding artist, Monet was part of a young group of painters that included Sisley, Renoir, and Cézanne. They were termed the “Impressionists” based on the incomplete-looking, individual strokes of their nouveau paintings. It was something the art world of the late 1800s had never seen before. Monet mastered the art of Impressionism, and he created his most loved and known water lily paintings before he was visually impaired. A painting attributed to Claude Monet depicting a young woman basking in the sun while wearing a hat is among the leading lots in the upcoming fall auction, presented by 500 Gallery. The front pencil monogram reads “Cl. M.”
