500 Gallery to Feature Art Attributed to Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, and More

Available from 500 Gallery this December is a broad selection of fine paintings, prints, multiples, drawings, and ethnographic artifacts. Leading the sale is an abstract composition attributed to Spanish artist Joan Miró. Titled Sans Titre, this gouache and ink on paper piece is a playful artwork that Miró created among a large collection of poetic, finely rendered works. It features geometric lines and sweeping arabesques, with motifs from the artist’s idiosyncratic style seen in the 1920s and continuing to appear in his later works. Simple and pure in its form, the drawing exhibits a playful vitality. It is triple-signed, and the verso is inscribed with ‘Palma de Mallorca 1941’ in graphite. Also available is a serilithograph on paper by French artist Jean-Claude Picot, titled Le Vase Blue de Madrid. A vase of flowers, fruit, and a checkerboard in a brightly colored room are portrayed in this still-life painting. Jean-Claude Picot drew ordinary objects and scenes with his joyful sense of humor using strong colors. The work is signed at the bottom right of the plate.

A piece of Cubist art attributed to Pablo Picasso, titled Visage d’une Femme, will be offered as well. In this work, the artist uses geometric forms to depict a representation of the human face in Cubism. This painting explores both the complex and changing nature of human identity. Other key artists with attributed works in the catalog include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Le Corbusier, and Andy Warhol. Among ethnographic works in the sale, a Dyo mask by the Bwa People of Burkina Faso is notable. Using art as a tool, the Bwa maintain a harmony between themselves and nature.
