Gemologists divide diamonds into two types based on the levels of nitrogen in the stone’s chemical structure. Type IIa diamonds are the most scientifically pure and are noted for their clarity. A 5-carat Type IIa diamond will be featured in the upcoming Fine Jewels auction, offered by Fortuna Auction. The diamond is placed in an 18-karat white gold ring and is flanked by two smaller diamonds. Another ring presented in the sale comes from the Harry Winston jewelry house. The pear-shaped piece follows the jeweler’s preference for elevating gemstones above metals.

Diamonds and aquamarines are alternated with morganite, a pink variation of beryl that resembles emeralds. The alternating pink-and-blue stones are ringed with small, brilliant-cut diamonds.
