In 1917, American painter Edgar Alwin Payne received his first major commission from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad asked Payne to depict the landscapes of the American Southwest along the railway route from Albuquerque to California in order to attract more tourists to the area. Though he later also painted landscapes in Europe, he is most often remembered for his work in the Southwest United States, one painting of which— a canyon landscape from Arizona— is up for bid in the Fine Western & American Art sale offered by Coeur d’Alene Art Auction.
Other notable works in the event include a depiction of a Native American hunter by Eanger Irving Couse, a portrayal of four Blackfoot leaders by Paul Pletka, and a depiction of Union soldier “Brass” on horseback by Kenneth Riley. There are also several sculptural works, such as a depiction of a lion and lioness by Jonathan Kenworthy, a bust of Chief Crazy Horse by Theodore Baur, a bronze depiction of Sacagawea by Harry Jackson, and more.
