U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Pistol by North

54 cal, 9 1/16″ round barrel with an oxidized bore. This arm is a good quality reconversion to flint and the metal surfaces have toned to a silvery gunmetal patina showing scattered old pitting and light dings. There is a small but rather deep tool mark on the left side breech along with the number “1785” scratched into the barrel. The original markings remain very clear however with a nice “P / US” at the left side breech, “S.” at the right and many of the smaller parts retain good sub-inspector stamps. A couple screws and some of the internal lock parts appear to be older replacements. The later-type lockplate markings remain mostly clear with some portions of the Federal Eagle and a few letters of “NORTH” worn away. The smooth walnut stock remains in very good plus condition showing some light abrasions at the tip, old small chips around the edges of the left side and scattered light dings. The stock shows some rather attractive grain figure throughout and there are good remnants of a cartouche on the left flat. A proper hickory ramrod with more modern steel ferrule is present and the lock functions crisply. Still a rather attractive example for the antique martial collector. (139387-17)

c1770 PAUL REVERE JR Silversmith Made Silver Porringer Hallmarked REVERE Boston

Colonial America
Paul Revere Jr. Silver Porringer Hallmarked “REVERE” (Kane Mark 7) With Ornate Handle Engraved “A*B”

(Our Front Cover Illustration Item)
c. 1770 Pre Revolutionary War, American Silver Porringer by Paul Revere Jr., Hallmarked “REVERE” (Kane Mark 7), Boston, Used, Choice Extremely Fine.
This Hand-Made Silver Porringer measures about 5″ in diameter and 7.75″ including the attached handle, about 2.25″ deep. Hallmarked “REVERE” on the inside bottom. The ornate keyhole handle engraved on the front with the initials “A*B”. Identified as the left side has two shallow minor dings apparently acquired during actual use, which only tend to enhance the originality and character of this fine piece of Paul Revere made Coin-Silver Porringer. Reportedly from Elizabeth Baily Dawes by decent through the Reverend Ebenezer Dawes (1755-1822) family in Scituate, Massachusetts.

This fine quality Porringer is Hallmarked with the full “REVERE” Punch on the interior of the bowl at center with a small shallow centering pellet mark below. (SEE: Patricia E. Kane’s, “Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers,” p. 848, and “Paul Revere Goldsmith” Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, p. 64. Mark 7 shown illustrated, identified as only used by Paul Revere, Jr., the American Revolutionary War Patriot). Weight about 7.54 troy oz. Length 7.75 inches, diameter of Bowl 5 inches. The engraved initials are sharply detailed and clearly in Paul Revere’s classic style. The central Hallmark punch is sharp and clear, showing actual light even wear from use and is perfect for display being prominently centered within the bowl, thus all of the important Paul Revere Jr. identifications appear on the outward and viewed side. Similar to Sotheby’s IMPORTANT AMERICANA Auction, January 22-23 2010, Lot 433, (Kane mark B), which brought $46, 875) our current example having a superior clearer central bowl Hallmark. Also, Sotheby’s January 21-22, 2011, IMPORTANT AMERICANA, Lot 169, (Kane mark 7), which sold for $80,500). A highly important larger size example of the Patriot Paul Revere’s fine Silversmith work representing a significant and historic period Silver collection highlight.
