Available from Palm Beach Modern Auctions this October is a robust collection of fine art, decorative art, furniture, and jewelry. Leading the sale is a three-part offset lithograph of Roy Lichtenstein’s As I Opened Fire, one of his best-known multipart paintings. This triptych is a sequence from All American Men of War that is appropriated for these images, altered, and enlarged to enhance the colors and contours. As cropped machine gun views are arranged, they are united by handwritten “BRAT!” and “BRATATATATA!” and by aerial combat captions. This work, an example of Pop Art, illustrates Lichtenstein’s response to Abstract Expressionism by erasing the artist’s hand from the artwork. Another key fine art lot in the catalog is a lithograph by American artist Robert Rauschenberg, titled Poster For Peace. Rauschenberg’s painting style was influenced by popular culture, technology, and eclectic materials. The offered work is an offset lithograph and is signed, dated, and numbered in pencil on the lower left.
Several jewelry lots will be on offer in this event, including a sterling silver Tiffany Swirl cuff bracelet. This piece from the Elsa Peretti collection has an inside circumference of approximately six inches with a one-inch opening. Also available is Tom Wesselmann’s SEASCAPE plaque. Woodard Lipe’s upcoming sale offers a wide-ranging catalog of fine art, decorative art, furniture, and more. Among the top lots is a lithograph poster by Spanish artist Joan Miró. Besides being a Surrealist, Joan Miró introduced automatism, an artistic expression of psychological inner thoughts. This piece was created in 1971 for a Galerie Maeght exhibition by Miró. Another notable fine art lot in the catalog is a color lithograph work by Salvador Dalí, a key figure in the Surrealist movement of the 20th century that emphasized the power of dreams to inspire creativity. Titled La Vierge De Guadeloupe, the offered piece features the Virgin of Guadalupe and is matted and framed in gold wood.

In its upcoming sale, Auctions at Showplace will present a wide variety of fine art, decorative art, jewelry, furniture, and more. Among the top lots is a 1971 color screenprint of Electric Chair by Andy Warhol. This medium-sized canvas is one of ten color screenprints by the artist. An image from Sing Sing prison was first used by Warhol in 1963 when New York State had its last execution. The artist uses a secondary palette of lavender, acid green, and teal in the Electric Chair prints, which contradicts the pathos portrayed, even as other artistic elements support it. The silkscreen process imparts to the prints an impression of loss, disappointment, and emptiness through irregularities, blurring, and murkiness. Another notable lot in the catalog is a colorful acrylic on canvas by American Pop artist Peter Max. Vase of Flowers displays the Neo-Fauvist color style of the artist at his best. By juxtaposing diversity and harmony of colors, Max transforms a still life of flowers into a flowing composition. The offered piece is signed at the top left and is accompanied by an authenticity letter.
Other works of note in this sale include Pablo Picasso’s Colombe Mate, a 1948 ceramic work that shows a beautiful dove resting on straw surrounded by a red brick border. The rectangular dish of earthenware clay is knife-engraved in yellow, red, and black slips and partially glazed. Also available by the artist is Oiseau No. 76, a ceramic plate depicting a serene-looking bird in its center. Another key contemporary work on offer is Louise Nevelson’s Collegiate School, a 1972 sculpture. The artist’s work tended to be monochromatic and usually all-black, in a manner that transcended representations between objects and viewers. Bidders can also consider Michael Estes Taylor’s art glass sculpture from the Kanazawa Series and a Campo del Cielo flying meteorite sculpture. Among the top lots is a screenprint by American artist Romare Bearden, titled Carolina Blue (Interior). Bearden’s works incorporate Black American experiences into modern American art. It was Bearden’s collages that made him known, largely because they engaged established artistic ideas, including Cubism and Dada, as well as the Expressionist impulse. In the offered work, the compositional style is rhythmic and lyrical, echoing the jazz tradition of call-and-response. Another key fine art lot in the catalog is a painting on canvas by Peter Max, titled Mathematical Glimpse. An illustrator and graphic artist, Peter Max is known for his colorful Pop Art and Neo-Expressionist works. Max’s fascination with numbers and mathematics parallels his fascination with visual phenomena. The available framed work is dated and signed in brown paint at the top right.
A selection of Pablo Picasso ceramics is available in this auction, including Profil de Jacqueline, a red earthenware clay Madoura dish image of his second wife. Jacqueline is portrayed in a geometric profile by Picasso, harsh and beautiful simultaneously, looking forward with lidded eyes and a calm and loving expression. The angular curves of Jacqueline’s profile are contrasted with the gently curved ceramic dish, which brings out the geometric features of her face. Bidders can also consider works from various other Asian cultures, including a Chinese silk scroll mountain landscape, a Japanese bronze Suiban and lead flower frog, and a pair of Chinese bronze sculptures of guardian (foo) lions. Available from Lone Star Art Auction this October is an impressive collection of paintings, prints, drawings, and fine artworks. Leading the catalog is a 1909 painting by American Impressionist Julian Onderdonk, titled Autumn Woods. A San Antonio native, Onderdonk is well known for his paintings of bluebonnets and Southwest landscapes. With his plein-air depictions of the magnificent blue flora, Onderdonk created a distinct subgenre of Texas art. Also available in the auction is a framed photogravure illustration of Brulé Warriors (The North American Indian, v. III), a 20-volume series of books written and published by Edward S. Curtis. A bronze sculpture by American artist Alexander Phimister Proctor, titled Stalking Panther, can also be considered. An officially signed ratification copy of the United States Constitution and other important early American documents will lead the upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions. This nine-lot auction includes the pamphlet of the Constitution of the United States, approved by the Philadelphia Convention. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia to address weak central government problems arising from the Articles of Confederation. George Washington presided over the convention proceedings. The U.S. Constitution was established at the convention with broader powers for the federal government, including the ability to conduct foreign relations. The available document was printed by John Fenno in Philadelphia in 1791, and bears the signature S. Johnston, with a marble design cover that reads, Constitution of the United States.

Dino Martens (1894 – 1970) was a celebrated Italian painter and designer noted for his glass art. His works closely reflect the Murano glass style of the 1950s. An accomplished painter, Martens worked with Aureliano Toso’s glass factory, rendering a series of remarkable glass vases between 1946 and 1960. He adopted a unique technique for his glass artworks by combining conventional Venetian techniques with bold colors and asymmetrical forms. Marten’s Oriente series is considered highly valuable. One such Oriente vase by Dino Martens is a key highlight of the upcoming Palm Beach Modern Auctions sale. The featured piece well represents Martens’ style with its biomorphic shape, patchwork composition, black and white murrine pin-wheels, and more.
Archimede Seguso’s ‘Alabastro’ floor vase is also highlighted in this sale. One of the 20th century’s master Venetian glassmakers, Archimede Seguso (1909 – 1999) was famous for his animal figurines, chandeliers, and other forms. Seguso, an entrepreneur and designer, started working with glass when he was just 11 years old. Besides rediscovering the massetto technique, he also experimented with the sommerso. This Murano glass technique involves blending colors and placing them atop each other to produce striking layers. The available piece is a rare vase that weighs nearly 25 pounds and has thick walls.
