Regarded as an iconic fantasy illustrator, J. Allen St. John left an enduring mark on fictional and heroic illustration. With his classical, dynamic compositions and elegant figures, his paintings are noted for their sense of whimsy and adventure. One of St. John’s paintings from 1922 depicts a gruesome battle; the piece would go on to be featured on the dust jacket of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Chessmen of Mars.
