The Pub, Whiskey, and Memorabilia Auction, presented by Whitley’s Auctioneers, examines life in the 19th and 20th centuries across the globe. Among the highlighted lots is film stock from World War II. While the film was not inspected by Whitley’s before reaching auction, writing on the canister implies it may contain footage from the Bombing of Hiroshima, the Battle of Luzon, and the eventual surrender of the Japanese aboard the U.S.S. Missouri.
Also featured are two sets of photographic plates and negatives from photojournalist Martin Munkacsi. Working primarily in the first half of the 20th century, Munkacsi’s photography of everyday life “captured the speed and movement of the modern era,” according to the International Center of Photography. One set available in this auction is comprised entirely of black and white photographic plates and negatives taken by Munkacsi in Europe. Another comes from both Munkacsi’s time abroad and his tenure at Harper’s Bazaar in New York. The second collection includes negatives taken of a German zoo, a woman with a Great Dane, and boats on the Hudson River.

Porcelain was invented in China over 2,000 years ago before gradually spreading to other countries. Known for its aesthetics and strength, porcelain combines well with both paints and glazes. Dueber’s personal pocket watch, a Hampden 23 Jewel Special Railway, is highlighted. In 1864, Dueber founded the Dueber Watch Case Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he made cases for the Hampden Watch Company. He later purchased the latter and moved both businesses to Canton, Ohio.
Available in this sale is an early American Verge Fusee style mechanism watch from watchmaker A. Brastow, of Lowell Massachusetts. This timepiece from the 1830s is signed “A. Brastow No. 6.” Other featured watches include pieces from the Waltham Watch Company, Lancaster Watch Co., Elgin Watch Company, J.P. Stevens, and New York Watch Co.

The upcoming Old Master Drawings auction offered by Sotheby’s includes an array of works on paper from many of the European schools, spanning from the 15th to the mid-19th century. The auction particularly emphasizes the revival of Italian artworks. Among the highlights of the sale is a recently rediscovered full compositional study by Andrea Mantegna for his painting titled The Triumph of Alexandria. Born in 1431, Mantegna is best known for his rigorous attention to detail.
The sale also includes a work in red chalk by Giuseppe Cesari. He was an Italian artist widely remembered for his coordination of major decorative projects in Rome, including the Olgiati chapel in Santa Prassede. Cesari favored the use of red or black chalk or a combination of the two in his paper works. His drawings mainly contrasted light and shade, achieved through parallel and crosshatched chalk strokes. The auction also holds an oil-on-paper study of a young girl by Annibale Carracci. He stands out among Italian Renaissance artists for his ability to convey the emotions of the subject.
