In 1927, Ambroise Vollard was in search of an artist who could illustrate La Fontaine’s fables, a key facet of French culture. The search led him to Russian-French artist Marc Chagall. Many criticized Vollard’s decision to ask a Russian artist with a Romantic style to portray the French culture. He justified his choice: “…simply because his aesthetic seems somewhat similar to that of La Fontaine, both solid and delicate, realistic and fantastic.” A piece from Marc Chagall’s series of La Fontaine’s fables will be presented in the upcoming Graphic Work & Photography Auction, offered by Morton Subastas.
In January, over 200 lots of posters, prints, fine art, and multiples will be presented. Serapi rugs entered the market in the early 19th century. Known for their strength and durability, Serapi rugs were weaved with silky wool that gave them a smooth, alluring texture.
