Harriet Whitney Frishmuth bronze fountain

Harriet Whitney Frishmuth bronze fountain

Harriet Whitney Frishmuth bronze fountain:

Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (American 1880-1980), bronze fountain Crest of the Wave, modeled 1926, signed and stamped The Gorham Co Founders OFMR, 22 examples cast in life-size, 64 1/2″ h. This is one of Frishmuth’s most iconic works. Gorham described it in its 1928 catalogue as “The essential characteristic of Miss Frishmuth’s Crest of the Wave is the manner in which this delightful figure expresses in its posture the moving water beneath it. The wave, only suggested in the pedestal, is made significantly apparent to the discerning eye by the up-drawn foot, the dancing sweep of the left arm and hand flung across the body, and most of all by the down-turned head, so clearly aware of the fast racing water beneath the poised foot. Illustrated in Jean Henry’s The National Sculpture Society Celebrates the Figure, 1987 catalogue, pg. 69; The National Sculpture Society’s Contemporary American Sculpture: The California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, San Francisco, April to October, 1929 catalogue, pg. 121; Kent Ahren’s Small Bronzes by Harriet Whitney Frismuth, Athens, Ohio Kennedy Museum of Art. Provenance: James Graham & Sons 2006.

Chinese Ming Stone Statue of Guanyin w/ Lotus Flower

Chinese Ming Stone Statue of Guanyin w/ Lotus Flower

Chinese Ming Stone Statue of Guanyin w/ Lotus Flower:

**Originally Listed At $18000**

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A gorgeous carved-stone statue of a Bodhisattva (also Guanyin, Guan Yin, Kuanyin in Chinese), the goddess of kindness, compassion, and mercy. Dressed in traditional garb, the elegant female is draped in a long robe that cascades down her figure in vertical pleats over a plain tunic and tied belt, while her chest is adorned with a double-strand, rope-patterned necklace boasting three lovely volutes and several plunging tassels. Her tranquil visage exhibits plump, bowed lips fixed in a gentle smile, a naturalistic nose with a low nasal bridge, and down-turned, slanted eyes under a sweeping brow. Skillfully carved with each strand of hair carefully delineated, an elaborate coiffure tops her head featuring two tightly-coiled ringlets that fall behind her ears and a bulbous top bun. A lovely ribbon with an ovoid pendant of Buddha wraps around her bun and ties in the back in a pair of bows with lengthy tails that drop over her sloped shoulders. Size: 22.5″ W x 33.5″ H (57.2 cm x 85.1 cm)

Her earlobes are elongated, according to tradition so that Guanyin can hear and respond to the suffering of all beings. Seated with her legs crossed in half lotus position, she holds a lotus flower with both hands. Note the artist’s careful attention to detail demonstrated in the wrinkling flesh of her neck. Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), “The Lord Who Gazes Down At The World”, is a bodhisattva portrayed as both male and female who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.

Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road, this piece is no exception. Bodhisattvas or Guanyin are associated with compassion and mercy – their long ears significant, because they rescue all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering.

Sican Lambayeque Copper Mask w/ Wings

Sican Lambayeque Copper Mask w/ Wings

Sican Lambayeque Copper Mask w/ Wings:

**Originally Listed At $27500**

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A mask made of hammered copper, with two huge copper projections that rise, similar to horns but actually representing wings, from the top of the head. Fifteen trapezoidal copper sheet danglers hang from the “wings” and face. The eyes are bulbous, applied half-spheres, each with a wire with two discs spaced out along them projecting outward from the center of the eyes, a look that has been variously interpreted as tears or a magical/enhanced ability to see. The nose is large and three-dimensional, with two pointed, flat projections arising from underneath it, probably replicating nose ornaments. There is no mouth. Similar examples have cinnabar pigment applied to them, and this piece may once have had that too. White pigment covers much of the face, leaving the area around the eyes and below the nose a green copper patina color. Size: 25″ W x 15.5″ H (63.5 cm x 39.4 cm); 18.7″ H (47.5 cm) on included custom stand.

The “wings” widen at their terminals into openwork depictions of a lord with a curved headdress and either multiple arms or wings of his own. This is Naymlap, the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty, who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before, it was said, sprouting wings and flying off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. He seems to have been worshipped by his descendants, and silver and gold vessels, weapons, and jewelry are all adorned with his likeness.

This mask was made to adorn the body of a deceased elite member of the Sican society – gold and silver were reserved for royalty, and copper for the nobility. Sican elites were patrons of workshops that made fine metal objects like this one, and they took their wealth with them when they died. Buried in mounds, they would be entombed in high style. It is difficult to imagine just how much wealth each individual was buried with – for example, one of the few controlled excavations of a high status Sican tomb, archaeologists found 1.2 tons of grave goods inside of a 3 meter square shaft tomb that also contained a man, aged 40 to 50 alongside four sacrificial victims, two women and two children. This included vast quantities of gold, silver, and copper artifacts.

The copper surface was originally painted and later on covered in textiles to preserve it, with the remains of both pigment and adhesive visible in some areas. Small areas of corrosion, but overall in excellent condition, with a pretty, pale turquoise, mottled patina. “Wings” are not attached to the mask but appear to be contemporary to it.
