California & American Fine Art

California & American Fine Art

Featured in the upcoming California & American Fine Art event, presented by John Moran Auctioneers, are several paintings representing the American West and Southwest. This includes a piece by W. Herbert Dunton showing Mexican vaqueros roping brown bears in New Mexico. Dunton spent his summers in Taos, New Mexico, where he illustrated the frontier lifestyle. He was aware that the Wild West era was quickly fading. “In another 25 years, the old westerner will have gone with the buffalo and the antelope,” he once wrote. “I’m going to hand down to posterity a bit of the unadulterated real thing.”

Bidders interested in early 20th-century paintings of the American West can also consider Frank Tenney Johnson’s oil study for Dust Stained Riders. The piece shows three cowboys racing across the California plains. In addition to the oil study, the lot comes with several letters, including a 1963 note from Johnson’s fellow artist James Swinnerton. He wrote to discuss how such field studies often capture aspects of the subject that are later lost in the final composition. Also among the highlighted lots is a wildflower landscape by Granville Redmond. The painting was acquired directly from the artist in 1930 by the Abbey Picture Framing company. Those interested in this or any other piece can register to bid on the John Moran Auctioneers website.

Important European Collection of Russian Art, Plus Other Properties

KHRUTSKY, IVAN

Featured in the upcoming MacDougall Art auction of Russian and European paintings are several influential artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work of Léopold Survage, a Finnish-born French artist, is among the highlighted lots. Survage was best known for his abstract depictions of city scenes. Online Only Decorative Arts Auction

Delft blue and white charger

Included in the upcoming Online Only Decorative Arts Auction, offered by Pook & Pook, Inc., is a Pennsylvania Sheraton tiger maple and cherry chest. The Sheraton style, popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, has a simpler, cleaner look than Queen Anne and Chippendale furniture. American craftsmen often used local woods to create contrasting veneers in their pieces, as seen in this tall chest. Other Pennsylvania furniture available in this sale includes a two-part Pennsylvania Dutch cupboard and several painted pine dry sinks. Used before the invention of indoor plumbing, dry sinks held a basin and pitcher above a storage cabinet.

A silver teapot, sugar, and creamer set from the 19th century is also featured in this auction. Possibly attributed to American silversmith Gerardus Boyce, each piece has a twisted handle and braided accents. Several stoneware jugs with cobalt decorations are available as well, including one stamped S. Hart Fulton. A country store floor display rack, Amish fiber arts, and other Pennsylvania antiques round out the sale. Visit Bidsquare to browse the complete catalog and register to bid.

Eclectic Collection of Estates Worldwide

Important 19th Cent. Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock

León Ferrari’s work caused numerous controversies in his time, a result of his direct critiques of the Pinochet regime in Argentina. He began his career as an engineer, eventually coming to sculpture and drawing as a medium for critiquing political and religious authority. “Art is not beauty or novelty,” he famously said, “art is effectiveness and disruption.” Ferrari was eventually exiled from his home country, but he continued making art that drew upon Abstract Expressionism, Fluxus, Minimalism, and appropriation. The upcoming Eclectic Collection of Estates Worldwide sale, offered by Akiba Antiques, will feature two of Ferrari’s steel sculptures. Both untitled works were made in the early 1980s. They are composed of thin steel rods arranged in linear patterns.
