ANNIE OAKLEY, Engraved Carriage Clock:
French carriage clock, gifted to Annie Oakley for her birthday during the American Exposition in London in 1887. Engraved “Annie Oakley” on top. A biography of Oakley mentions the carriage clock as being among the more than five dozen gifts she received from many members of European royalty. As well, the family’s history maintains that this clock was with her in 1901 when she was involved in the train disaster that injured her badly. Measures about 4-1/2″ high to top, not including handle. One of several of Annie Oakley’s personal items from the Patterson family in today’s auction. Provenance: Obtained directly from descendants. Includes copy of letter of provenance from a direct descendant of Emily Patterson. Also includes copies of the pages from the last will and testament of Oakley’s niece, specifically naming the clock. This item can be shipped in-house.
ConditionSee images. Clock does run when wound. Hairline in upper right corner of porcelain face, possibly a result of the damage that occurred in the 1901 train wreck.

Portrait of SITTING BULL, Caroline Weldon, 1890:
Oil on canvas painting of Lakota Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, by Caroline Weldon (Swiss/American, 1844-1921). Weldon (nee Susanna Carolina Faesch) reportedly painted four portraits of Sitting Bull, two of which were presumed to be lost. The other two are in museums. (One of these is a very similar portrait — though not nearly as well-painted — that hangs in the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock. The other is in the collection of the North Dakota Historical Society in Bismarck.) Weldon was portrayed by Jessica Chastain in the 2017 movie, Woman Walks Ahead, which chronicles (albeit with some dramatic historical license) Weldon’s amicable, occasionally contentious relationship with Sitting Bull. His name appears lower left, signed and dated lower right. Painting measures 27″ x 22″ in original 35-1/2″ x 30-1/2″ frame. Provenance: Originally in possession of railroad construction engineer, William Lafayette Darling of Minnesota, involved in construction and repair of rail lines in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota during the 1890s. Thence by descent to the consignor. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own.

Theodore Roosevelt’s Pocket Watch:
American Waltham watch in coin silver case. No engraving on outside. Inside the cover is engraved “Theodore Roosevelt” and “From D.R. and C.R.R.” A present from Teddy Roosevelt’s sister, given to him just prior to his leaving for Cuba, referenced in at least two of his letters to her. In her 1924 book, My Brother Theodore Roosevelt, Corinne Roosevelt Robinson (C.R.R.) includes a number of her brother’s letters, including one written just prior to his engagement in Cuba. His May 5, 1898, letter began: “You could not have given me a more useful present than the watch; it was exactly what I wished … thank old Douglas [D.R.] for the watch — and for his many, many kindnesses.” In his 1914 book, Through the Brazilian Wilderness, the former president writes about a particularly difficult bayou crossing. “One result of the swim, by the way, was that my watch, a veteran of Cuba and Africa, came to an indignant halt.” In their 2018 book, Theodore Roosevelt: A Literary Life, the authors reference a letter in which Roosevelt, just before departing for Cuba, “thanked his brother-in-law Douglas Robinson for sending a Waltham watch, one he would use in battle to gage precisely what he would call his ‘crowded hour’ …” On the inside lid is incised a tiny service mark from a watchmaker, which includes “4/16” — presumed to represent April 1916 — corresponding to the needed repair of the watch that had seen San Juan Hill, an African safari, a storied presidency and a South American jungle expedition that very nearly killed him. The watch does run when wound, but only for a few seconds. There is some wear, as well as a few touch marks (dings). Obtained from a Buffalo, N.Y., private collection, purported to have been obtained in the 1980s. After Theodore Roosevelt’s death in 1919, many of his personal possessions were handed down by his wife, Edith, to different family members and friends. It is unknown, at present, as to who received this watch originally — the family of Kermit, Theodore Jr., Ethel or someone else. Many of TR’s personal items have reached the auction market since at least the 1950s including — most recently — an engraved Smith & Wesson pistol and a presentation hunting knife. Research is ongoing. This item can be shipped in-house.
