An eighteen karat gold, ruby, and diamond necklace, Buccellati Italy

A renowned Italian jewelry brand, Buccellati flourished in the jewelry world between the 1920s and the 1960s. Mario Buccellati started a small shop in Milan in 1919. Often called the Prince of Goldsmiths, his works helped revive the Renaissance style. An 18-karat gold, ruby, and diamond necklace by Buccellati highlights Freeman’s upcoming Jewelry and Watches auction. An oval cabochon ruby centers the necklace. White gold details and brilliant-cut diamonds accent the stone.

An 18-karat gold and diamond bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels will be featured as well. Crafted in 1950, the piece has flexible domed interlinks set with round brilliant-cut diamonds. A diamond and platinum clip brooch by Cartier London is also available. The brooch features flower and bud motifs. John Singer Sargent, Thomas Moran Headline Sotheby’s American Art Sale

John Singer Sargent Mrs. William George Raphael

By the early 1900s, John Singer Sargent was a conflicted artist. His portrait paintings were in high demand in America and even England, where he’d struggled to gain footing before. However, Sargent was most passionate about his watercolor paintings inspired by a lifetime of travel. Coming to auction as part of Sotheby’s American Art sale is a portrait by John Singer Sargent, completed a year before he swore off portrait painting for good. Sargent depicts his subject, Mrs. William George Raphael, leaning toward the viewer while touching her turquoise necklace.

Representing Thomas Moran in this sale is Grand Canyon, Arizona. Originally born in England, Moran eventually moved with his family to America and used his paintings to advocate for the country’s National Park Service. In this painting, Moran uses passing rain clouds to experiment with varying light and colors across the canyon.

Two of the most well-known American artists of the 20th century, Norman Rockwell and Georgia O’Keeffe, have work available. Norman Rockwell’s study for Saying Grace is on offer. Viewers will notice one more child at the table, a little girl, than in the final composition. There are also a few missing pieces from this study, including two young, male onlookers who would eventually make their way into the painting, a reminder of Rockwell’s methodical approach. Meanwhile, Georgia O’Keeffe collectors will find Green Oak Leaves, an early example of the artist blurring the line between realism and abstraction. Those interested in this or any other piece can register to bid on Sotheby’s website.

Maine Landscape by Fairfield Porter Leads Upcoming American Art Auction

FAIRFIELD PORTER (1907-1975)

Bonhams’ upcoming American Art auction will highlight a late-career oil painting by Fairfield Porter. Known as both a representational painter and a leading art critic, Porter believed that realism and abstraction must work together instead of apart. His works reflect that mindset, handling color and light with equal care. The available painting, titled Yawl in the Channel, depicts the Maine landscape just outside of Porter’s home. Smooth stratus clouds float above a gray and brown shoreline. A small white boat can be seen in the upper left corner of the painting.

This American art sale will present four works by Milton Avery from the Barter Family Collection of American Paintings. Avery’s 1963 Sunflowers painting demonstrates the artist’s commitment to color while reducing representational detail. Completed just two years before his death, Sunflowers shows the eponymous flowers in a moss green vase against a purple and violet background. The other available Avery paintings depict tall “lollipop” trees, a spring landscape, and a cross-legged figure wearing a rain hat. The catalog offers a hippopotamus sculpture by Sargent Johnson, blustery winter scenes by Guy Carleton Wiggins, and floral paintings by Laura Coombs Hills. Visit Bonhams’ website for the full catalog and to place a bid.

Hindman Offers Luxury Jewelry by Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. Tony Duquette

HARRY WINSTON, DIAMOND RING

This spring, Hindman will present an array of signed luxury jewelry and antique keepsakes in the upcoming Important Jewelry sale. The event brings items by American jeweler Harry Winston, including a diamond ring. This platinum ring features a pear-shaped brilliant-cut diamond surrounded by two tapered baguette-cut diamonds. The ring comes with a GIA Diamond Grading Report from 2021, certifying the clarity and authenticity of the gems.

The auction spotlights several jewelry pieces from Tiffany & Co. One key lot is an enamel and diamond bangle bracelet designed by Jean Schlumberger. Without any formal training in fine jewelry, Schlumberger started his career in the 1920s in Paris for fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. His creations soon caught the attention of Walter Hoving, Tiffany’s chairman, who offered Schlumberger a job. At Tiffany, he quickly built an elite clientele that included Audrey Hepburn, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, and Elizabeth Taylor. Schlumberger remains one of only four jewelers who have signed their creations for Tiffany & Co. The available gold and enamel bangle bracelet, ribbed with ropework, features round brilliant-cut diamonds. To view the complete catalog and register to bid, visit Bidsquare

Dale Chihuly and Peter Voulkos Will Lead Coming Rago Sale

Dale Chihuly, Persian and Horn Chandelier

While traditional glass-making is about symmetry, Dale Chihuly’s work shows a departure from the past. To create his sculptures, Chihuly allows molten glass to find its own shape organically using gravitational force. Irregularity and asymmetry are defining characteristics of his work. Over the years, he has produced a wide range of colors, textures, and patterns. A Dale Chihuly glass piece, titled Persian and Horn Chandelier, will be available in the upcoming Modern Design auction from Rago. Completed in 2006, the hand-blown glass chandelier displays vibrant shades of blue, yellow, and orange.

Another featured lot is Peter Voulkos’ untitled sculpture from 1957. “I am not a conceptual artist,” Voulkos said. “I can’t just sit there and think of an idea. Most of it comes out of my hands.” An American sculptor, Voulkos was well known for his large clay sculptures. He frequently experimented with the boundaries of sculpture and pottery. The handmade lot is gas-fired stoneware with oxide or slip glazes. Browse the entire collection and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Palm Beach Modern Auctions Offers Selection of Contemporary Art & Design

Monumental George Segal Bronze Sculpture Installation

Pop artist George Segal’s work interacts directly with the viewer’s psychology, a difference compared to other 20th-century Pop art that focused on daily mass-produced objects. The New York-based sculptor was famous for his life-sized human body sculptures hosted in public spaces like coffee shops and train stations. His figurative sculptures momentarily drifted the viewer away from the fast-paced world and allowed them to focus on their inner self. Palm Beach Modern Auctions’ upcoming event highlights a monumental sculpture by George Segal. Circus Acrobats features two life-sized figurines of trapeze artists trying to catch each other. The 1989 ceiling-suspended sculpture features Segal’s signature casting style with rough surfaces and a bright white color.

The Acrobats by Fernand Léger emphasizes the artist’s variant form of Cubism involving tubular shapes, popularly known as Tubism. In 1917, Léger returned to Paris after suffering a war injury. The painter spent most of his time exploring Parisian life, including the famous Montmartre circus Cirque Médrano. The Acrobats is a 1952 gouache painting of two contortionists against a natural background. The brightly colored painting also highlights the tubular forms of the acrobats’ limbs, a prime Tubism example by Léger. Two graffiti art-inspired drawings by Jean-Michel Basquiat will be available as well.

For fashion collectors and enthusiasts, the auction will offer a collection of Hermès handbags. Showcased is a Birkin 25 handbag launched in 1980. The sale also includes sculptures by Pablo Picasso and Louise Nevelson, Alexandre Noll furniture, Christofle and Tiffany & Co. silverware, and a Kenneth Noland scarf. Interested collectors can view the entire catalog and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
