Nicola Simbari’s Contemporary Painting Will Go Under Showplace’s Hammer

Italian painter Nicola Simbari’s early works mostly depict scenes from his everyday life and Mediterranean landscapes. After exploring several painting movements, he developed his own style, which is today known as Simbaresco. Simbari frequently employed expressive strokes and pastel hues in his paintings. The upcoming New York City Estate Auction, presented by Showplace, will feature an oil painting by Nicola Simbari. The piece shows a view of Ostia Beach in bright shades of blue and ochre. The sale will also feature an oil painting from Surrealist artist Alexie Sundukov. It depicts a round brain in black and white.

One notable lot among the 280 available items is Jorge Zalszupin’s T Invertido leather and chrome sofa. Zalszupin was a 20th-century designer recognized for his modern style. Dominican-born fashion designer Oscar de la Renta worked with several luxury brands, like Lanvin and Balenciaga, before establishing his eponymous brand in New York in 1965. His work blended European femininity with American comfort. The Oscar de la Renta line of evening gowns and suits was a hit among socialites and red-carpet celebrities such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Penelope Cruz. On November 14th, 1917, Harry Houdini wrote a letter to the curator of the Boston Public Library describing a tribute he and fellow magicians paid to Harry Kellar: “The affair was without a doubt the grandest event that ever happened in the world of mystery, and when we carried Kellar from the stage in a sedan chair and had about 50 men and women and children throw flowers at him, I saw him weep…” This letter, along with a later photograph of Houdini and other memorabilia, will be available in Potter & Potter Auctions’ upcoming Fall Magic Auction. 

This sale particularly highlights books and magic apparatus. Among the notable lots is a copy of The Expert at the Card Table by S. W. Mecum Auctions Offers Chevrolet Copo Camaro

Chevrolet began when William C. Durant, one of the founders of General Motors, joined forces with Swiss racecar driver and engineer Louis Chevrolet. The brand soon became known for its performance, durability, and innovation. Chevrolet went on to develop several automotive inventions, including fuel injection, safety glass, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control systems. A 1969 Chevrolet Copo Camaro will be available in Mecum Auctions’ upcoming Dallas 2021 sale. The vehicle features an M21 four-speed transmission and a 140 MPH speedometer.

A Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback will also be available in the sale. Manufactured in 1970, the 429 model was designed for NASCAR races. The engine features hemispherical combustion chambers, deep-breathing heads, and a huge valve. The exterior of the vehicle is sea green while its interior has a polished black hue. Producing domestic porcelain was a risky business in early 19th-century America. New manufacturers faced stiff competition from European brands with deep connections to the upper class. William Tucker of Philadelphia counted on the swell of American patriotism that followed the War of 1812 to establish a brand of affordable household porcelain. He enjoyed a few years of prosperity before turning to cotton. Wiederseim Associates will present a pair of Philadelphia Tucker porcelain pitchers from the brand’s early days in an upcoming sale. The offered pitchers feature floral medallions on each side and dark gold accents around the neck. 

This upcoming two-day auction will also feature a selection of 20th-century furniture, collectibles, and fine art. Leading the available furniture lots is a custom library bookcase made by Kinloch Woodworking, Ltd. of Unionville, Pennsylvania. The mahogany bookcase includes glass doors, a broken arch bonnet, and floral inlays. A set of 12 chairs in the style of Thomas Chippendale is also notable. Inspired by Formula One race cars, Richard Mille RM011 Asia watches are known for their bold characteristics and lightweight design. The watches feature aerospace and racing car manufacturing materials, including carbon nanotubes hardened with ceramic. These materials are rarely used by other timepiece makers. A Richard Mille RM011 Asia watch is one of the key highlights of the upcoming Kodner auction. The 2016 Filipe Massa Asia limited-edition chronograph watch has an automatic self-winding movement. It features a brown ceramic case and an 18 karat rose gold buckle.

Brunk Auctions to Feature Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Watercolor Drawing

Artist Elizabeth O’Neill Verner was a leader and pioneer of the Charleston Renaissance.  She was a representational painter, and her works are notable for documenting the changing socio-political landscape of the American South. Brunk Auctions’ upcoming sale will feature several prints by the artist. One of the highlights is a watercolor and graphite work titled Rustic Madonna, Taxco. This piece depicts a mother cradling a child on her lap.

Wilhelm Frerichs, a 19th-century Belgian artist, is also represented in the sale. Frerichs found his muse in the rolling mountains and swiftly flowing rivers of North Carolina. He created expansive canvases that incorporated the aesthetics of his favorite waterfalls. Available in this sale is an untitled oil painting by Wilhelm Frerichs. Beyond fine art, the auction also highlights a Charleston mahogany dressing table in excellent condition. Oswaldo Guayasamín Portrait Will Lead Akiba Antiques Auction

Born in 1919 in Ecuador, Oswaldo Guayasamín rose to prominence following his first exhibition at the Salón Nacional de Acuarelistas y Dibujantes in 1948. The artist eventually became known for his Cubist style and depictions of Latin American people. He spent his career explicitly addressing issues of oppression, violence, poverty, and political conflict. An oil painting from Oswaldo Guayasamín will be presented in the upcoming East Coast Estate Finds Sale, offered by Akiba Antiques. Titled Head or Cabezo, the piece shows the face of a woman with a vibrant color palette. 

Another painting by Armando Morales, titled Mujer Sentada, is one of the featured lots. Morales was best known for his depictions of tropical scenes, still lifes, and nude portraits. He is often associated with the figurative art movement. Depicting a seated figure, the offered painting incorporates gestural brushstrokes with mostly black, yellow, and blue hues. Bonhams Presents Wendy and Les Fisher’s Collection of Canadian Inuit Art

A FRITZ SCHOLDER PAINTING

Dr. Les Fisher, director of Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, and his late wife Wendy acquired an extensive collection of Canadian Inuit art over the years. Bonhams will offer items from the couple’s collection in an upcoming auction of Canadian Inuit art. Headlining the auction is a painting by Native American artist Fritz Scholder. A member of the federally recognized California Mission Luiseno tribe of the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians, Scholder often painted distorted subjects with bright, vivid colors. The available oil painting, titled Luiseño, shows a figure with a human-like body and animalistic facial features walking next to their shadow. The unframed painting stands 80 inches tall and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. 

Also available in the auction are works by sculptor Judas Ullulaq. While Ullulaq’s sculptures were largely made using stone, the artist was known for incorporating mixed-media accents such as bone, whalebone, ivory, antler, sinew, and musk-ox horn. The Caribou Hunter is a highlighted sculpture by the Canadian Inuit artist. The stone and wood piece depicts a seated hunter wearing goggles and holding a caribou.
