A Ribbon Chair and ottoman designed by Pierre Paulin in 1966 is available in Cain Modern Auctions’ upcoming sale of art, décor, and furniture. The Ribbon Chair available in this auction is a statement piece. Its contoured shape allows the sitter to assume a variety of positions while retaining the necessary support. The swirl upholstery in bright yellow and gray emphasizes the chair’s retro look. Decorative furniture and art seekers will find designer sofas, beds, chairs, 20th-century and Asian works of art, pop culture collectibles, and more in the upcoming auction.
Those seeking outdoor furniture items will find an iconic pair of pebble stools by 2Design Studio. Doyle’s October auction of Latin American, Post-War, & Contemporary Art surveys a variety of art movements and styles. Leading the listings is a painted wall construction from Louise Nevelson. The American sculptor and assemblage artist created evocative works that explored cityscapes, the celestial realm, and Cubism. Nevelson favored a monochromatic palette, relying almost exclusively on black and white spray paint to color her pieces. She believed that black signaled totality rather than nothingness. This sale offers Louise Nevelson’s Wall Zag construction. First exhibited at Pace Gallery in 1979, this all-black piece features numerous rectangular cubbies with wooden geometric details.
Another notable assemblage piece on offer from Doyle is Kwang-Young Chun’s Aggregation 06-AU044. A Korean artist, Chun creates complex sculptures using triangular forms wrapped in traditional mulberry paper. He uses various teas and light pigments to add color to his roiling, textured works. Tiny wrapped packages make up the available mixed media piece. Upon close inspection, printed text is visible on each triangular element. Collectors can also consider a tall bronze sculpture from Sorel Etrog, an oil painting from Chilean artist Roberto Matta, and a watercolor by Diego Rivera. Painter Fidelia Bridges was known for her elaborate and detailed landscapes. She was a seminal woman artist who worked with both watercolor and oil paints. Bridges painted “as if the year were all springtime,” explained critics. Her paintings of birds and flowers in meadows and marshes created lyrical happiness. The upcoming Eldred’s auction presents Birds In A Marsh Landscape by Fidelia Bridges. It shows a small bird diving under a patch of grass near the water.
This sale exclusively highlights the work of women artists. An oil painting titled Interior Scene With Two Women by Eda Elisabeth Sterchi is of particularly interest. A bold and independent artist, Sterchi created paintings that were famous for their European Modernist influence. The featured artwork portrays her signature abstract style and bold colors.
Bidders will also find paintings by avant-garde artist Jessica Dismorr. Notable is Dismorr’s In the Alpes Maritimes, France oil on board painting depicting a white hill town among trees and mountains. With its thick and bold application of colors, this piece is an example of Dismorr’s abstract austerity. The auction also features works of Impressionist artist Martha Walter, a bronze by Agnes McGuire McCahill, and hand-crafted designer jewelry by Etta Jane. Interested collectors can explore the entire catalog and register to bid online on Eldred’s.
Landscape artist Charles Muench is best known for his detail-oriented and realistic painting style. Muench usually chooses to travel and paint outdoors rather than use digital photos as memory fillers. He compares the experience of on-location painting to having a conversation with nature. Charles Muench’s View To Pasadena (2014) is a key highlight of this upcoming John Moran Auctioneers event. The painting illustrates the artist’s sensitivity to his surroundings— the colors, shapes, and lighting of the cityscape and skyline.
Two paintings by John Anthony Conner (1897 – 1971) also lead the listings. Compelling colors and unrestrained brush strokes characterize the pieces. Fauvism of the early 20th century greatly influenced the artist. His subject matter included desert landscapes and the American Western genre. The auction catalog includes an 1890s German Vienna wall clock as well. The enameled metal dial bears a signature from Karl Suchy Sohne. The outer minute track centers a brass dore plaque. The clock is encased in glazed ebonized wood with carved floral motifs and urn finials. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit John Moran Auctioneers.

At the beginning of Congress’ second session in 1790, the United States federal government was essentially bankrupt. Its financial obligations were over $79 million, and the government had no way to repay its debts. The first edition of this document is currently up for bid at Freeman’s from the Alexander Hamilton Collection of John E. Herzog. The document includes a broad legislative program that set the foundation of today’s financial system.
Each available historical item, document, and manuscript relates to Alexander Hamilton. Beyond the Treasury report, there are also autographed letters, a printed Treasury Department circular, signed promissory notes, and a lot of five items related to the birth and death of Hamilton. Bidders will also find a small painting modeled after the famed Hamilton portrait by John Turnbull. View any of these lots and register to bid on Bidsquare.
