Alexej von Jawlensky’s Lithograph Highlights Upcoming Showplace Auction

Alexej von Jawlensky Portrait Lithograph in Colors

In 1889, Alexej von Jawlensky abandoned his career in the Russian Imperial Guard to apprentice under Ilya Repin, a Russian painter. In 1896, he traveled to Munich, where he came across renowned artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky went on to influence many of von Jawlensky’s works. Today, he is remembered for his Expressionistic paintings and abstract portraits. Showplace’s forthcoming New York City Estate Sale will offer an Alexej von Jawlensky lithograph. The framed artwork uses clean lines to depict a woman’s frowning face.

The auction also presents a ceramic owl pitcher from Pablo Picasso. While known for his Cubist paintings, Picasso was also a prolific ceramicist. He began working with ceramics in the 1940s and designed around 600 ceramics throughout his career. Titled Hibou, the offered piece has a mark on the bottom that reads “Edition Picasso Madoura.” The pitcher’s spout represents the owl’s beak, and its round eyes appear on either side. Attleboro Arts Museum Auction to Feature Florence Como’s Landscape Painting

FLORENCE COMO, Winter Beauty on the Farm

Painter Florence Como is best known for her elaborate landscapes. She works with acrylic, watercolor, and oil paints. Many of her paintings feature bold colors and show a balance of light and dark. The upcoming 30th Annual Benefit Art Auction, offered by Attleboro Arts Museum, presents Winter Beauty on the Farm by Florence Como. It shows a man walking out of his house, which is surrounded by white glistening snow.

This sale also highlights a piece by Kristina N. Occhino, titled Rhythm of Life. The artist initially wanted to create a traditional watercolor painting depicting a fishing boat heading to the dock. However, the reflections in the water inspired her to enhance the patterns and shapes in the artwork. Occhino then began to cut her work up into vertical strips and placed them in a wave-like pattern. The offered lot depicts the rhythm of the sea. The upcoming Fortuna Auction sale highlights a Chopard L.U.C Esprit de Fleurier Tourbillon 18-karat white gold watch. Nadeau’s Auction Gallery’s Annual Major Fall Americana and Chinese Auction presents an oil painting in the manner of Italian artist Giuseppe Recco. The available still life painting depicts a fruit basket with grapes and pomegranates placed atop an elaborate rug. A wooden clock appears in the background.

A diminutive Chippendale mahogany chest also highlights the listings. The piece is named after renowned cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. The Ricky Jay Collection of Magic Posters, Books, and More at Sotheby’s

Alt, Al The inspiration for Ricky Jay Plays Poker

Though many Americans know him as an actor in such films as The Prestige, Boogie Nights, House of Games, and Magnolia, Ricky Jay was first and foremost a stage magician. In a New Yorker profile, Mark Singer called him “perhaps the most gifted sleight of hand artist alive.” Beyond performing, Jay was also a writer and scholar who documented the history of magic and magic-adjacent topics such as circuses, jugglers, automatons, con men, and more. Many items from Ricky Jay’s collection are up for bid at Sotheby’s.

One top lot in the sale is a two-volume compilation of prints described by a 19th-century auction catalog as “An extensive Collection of Portraits of Remarkable Characters, Male and Female, Beggars, Misers, Highwaymen, Cheats, Forgers, Imposters, Montebanks, Bawds, Persons Tried for Treason, Sedition, &c.” Other available items include a magic poster that shows Harry Houdini performing one of his well-known and most dangerous tricks: hanging upside-down in a water torture cell. A selection of books about witchcraft, playbills for a variety of performances, and a book about the supposedly live autopsy of an acclaimed mind reader round out the listings. Pablo Picasso Monotype to Spotlight Bonhams Auction

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

At a young age, Pablo Picasso expressed an interest in painting. He received training from his father, a professor of drawing. Picasso eventually became a titan of the Cubist art movement. Bonhams upcoming Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples auction presents a Pablo Picasso monotype titled Flûtiste et dormeuse XVI. The piece is one of only two Picasso monotypes completed in 1933. The artwork shows a flute player sitting next to a serene sleeping model, who is most likely Picasso’s young lover Marie-Thérèse Walter. The monotype was made by painting on a glass and then transferring the composition to paper by applying pressure.

Also featured is David Hockney’s My Shirt and Trousers. Hockney dabbles in many art mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, and watercolor. His works frequently depict swimming pools, landscapes, and portraits of friends. The offered lot is an iPad drawing printed on woven paper. It depicts clothes lying on a beige club chair.
