Hermès Kelly is an iconic handbag named after the American actress and Monégasque princess Grace Kelly. The princess famously covered her baby belly from photographers with the bag. Kelly helped popularize the style, and it was later named after her. An Hermès Kelly Retourne 35 handbag in blue clemence is available in the upcoming Crescent City Auction Gallery sale. The Hermès Retourne, unlike other Hermès bags, has reverse stitching that gives its frame a softer edge. It was made in 2007 of calf leather and silvered hardware. A painting by Sir George Clausen, titled The Wave, is available in the auction. This oil on canvas portrays a man and a woman looking towards the sky as if captivated by something. The man holds a rake while the woman waves her handkerchief. Clausen was called a British rural naturalist painter of the late 19th century, known for depicting the country and people. He took inspiration from the Impressionist painters and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Amos Doolittle’s 1775 prints will be crossing the auction block this month during Christie’s Important Americana sale. Doolittle visited Lexington and Concord shortly after a conflict took place between the colonial militia and the British troops. He then interviewed several eyewitnesses to create a series depicting the moments of April 19, 1775. The resulting print, titled A View of the Town of Concord, shows the British marching towards Concord. A version of this piece is available in the auction. In another available Doolittle work, titled A View of the Town of Lexington, burning buildings can be seen as the British retreat back to Boston. Explaining the documentation of the event, the lot essay writes, “Crude as they are, Doolittle’s prints of the battle are the best pictorial record— indeed, the only pictorial record by a contemporary American— of the events of April 19, 1775. They are the only representations of the battle with a genuine claim to authenticity.”
Another lot highlighted in the auction is Charles Peale Polk’s oil painting of George Washington. Polk was a celebrated American portrait painter in the 18th century. Italian-born designer Elsa Peretti became a popular runway model after she arrived in New York in the late 1960s. Associated with German Romanticism, painter Adolf Schreyer first got a taste of travel during the Crimean War. Schreyer followed the Austrian army while working as an artist and reporter. The geography and culture of Egypt and Syria entranced him. He learned local dialects and made a career of painting action-filled scenes from the region. Willow Auction House’s upcoming sale of the Balogh Family Fine Art Collection features several key works by Adolf Schreyer. Among them is an image of riders on horseback approaching a water source, a signature piece. Like other German Romanticists from the Düsseldorf School, Schreyer used a subdued palette to capture his far-flung scenes.
