All but one with branded maker’s mark and dated 1966; one with an incised signature and “1974”.

Condition
Overall very good condition. Frames appear to have been refinished and have only occasional minor surface abrasions. Original leather upholstery is in very good condition with light creasing and scuffing.

Description:

George Ohr (Mississippi, 1857-1918) Ceramic Puzzle Mug, signed on verso, with brown glaze and pierced sides with embossed twist and flower handle.

George Ohr was an American ceramicist. The self-proclaimed ‘Mad Potter of Biloxi’ studied at the Newcomb College and worked primarily in Mississippi. While his early work was primarily functional, he became more experimental in his later work. It was not until after his death that Ohr’s work achieved widespread acclaim. Today, Ohr’s work can be found in private collections as well as in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, LACMA, and the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, among others.

Jimmy Lee Sudduth was an imaginative folk artist and blues musician from Fayette, Alabama. He rarely painted with brushes, but rather used his fingers to directly apply his pigments, often clay, mud, sand or soot, directly onto plywood boards. Drawing inspiration from the world around him, Sudduth painted animals, architecture, farm scenes, people he knew, and the occasional celebrity he didn’t. He exhibited widely in his lifetime and is viewed as an early master of contemporary Southern art. His work can be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum and the House of Blues among others.

Heather McGill is a contemporary American artist who works with paper, beads and other materials. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and has received several prestigious awards including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award in 1999. She spent 20 years living in Detroit while working as the Head of the Sculpture Department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She currently lives and works in Santa Fe. possibly Greene County, 19th century, underside of lid with extensive pencil inscriptions including “Wm. Cundiff was born October the 4th 1847”, other dates and Cundiff family inscriptions, the case with original red and blue/green paint decoration, one case side decorated with stars, additional stars painted on bottom, interior with lidded till, poplar throughout, 18 x 34 x 14 in.

Note: Genealogy supports the tradition that this chest is from Greene County, Tennessee. William and Abraham Condiff (alternate spelling) both appear in 19th century Greene County records. Several William Cundiffs also appear in Kentucky records of the same period, and the chest could have connections to that region as well.
