Rare Patriotic Tennessee Attributed Paint Decorated Chest

Winning Bid: $4,000

Rare Patriotic Tennessee Attributed Paint Decorated Chest:

possibly Greene County, 19th century, underside of lid with extensive pencil inscriptions including “Wm. Cundiff was born October the 4th 1847”, other dates and Cundiff family inscriptions, the case with original red and blue/green paint decoration, one case side decorated with stars, additional stars painted on bottom, interior with lidded till, poplar throughout, 18 x 34 x 14 in.

Provenance: From the Collection of Charlotte and L. C. Beckerdite

Note: Genealogy supports the tradition that this chest is from Greene County, Tennessee. William and Abraham Condiff (alternate spelling) both appear in 19th century Greene County records. Several William Cundiffs also appear in Kentucky records of the same period, and the chest could have connections to that region as well.

Condition
excellent condition with original paint, expected surface wear and losses especially at top and moldings, probably original hinges (one with old patch and repair at edge of lid)
