Ilse Bing started her photographic journey sometime in 1931 with just a small Leica camera. Bing is also known as Queen of the Leica for being the first professional to wholeheartedly adopt the innovative technology of the 35mm single-lens camera. She wasn’t shy to experiment and be bold while shooting her films. Her inventiveness and originality got her noticed by magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and designers like Elsa Schiaparelli. Bing became an avant-garde photographer of the interwar period and a fashion photographer. A silver gelatin print of Washington Heights covered in snow, signed “Ilse Bing 1948,” is available in the upcoming Summer Curated and Groll Estate Auction from Willow Auction House

Karel Appel’s Jumping Dog II and Jim Davis’ Garfield Meets Rockwell Available in Dane Fine Art’s Upcoming Summer Sale

Among the modern and contemporary fine art items listed in the upcoming Dane Fine Art Summer Sale is a rare, limited edition wood sculpture from Karel Appel’s 1978 Circus collection. Standing 40 inches high and 25 inches wide, this orange and red painted dog shown jumping through a colorful hoop has been signed and numbered by the artist at the bottom of its base. Guaranteed in perpetuity, this piece also comes with a letter of authenticity.

In the auction is an offset lithograph by Jim Davis after Norman Rockwell titled Garfield Meets Rockwell (The Great Frame Up). This 1978 work of art shows Norman Rockwell holding a large picture frame as if he also belongs on the wall with the other artwork. Just below the frame is Garfield, who is holding a smaller frame in the same fashion. Abstract Expressionist artist Richard Diebenkorn was famous for his lyrical and geometric artworks. In 1961, the artist started focusing on printmaking at Kathan Brown’s Crown Point Press. This fine arts printing studio published the artist’s first prints, titled 41 Etchings Drypoints. After that, Diebenkorn would often return to this press and produce his works. The upcoming Bonhams auction presents a woodcut color print by Richard Diebenkorn on Echizen Kozo Mashi paper. Titled Blue with Red, the artwork is notable for its calm nature and glistening hues. A Mixografia color print on handmade paper by Rufino Tamayo is another highlight. Tamayo developed Mixografia, a medium offering a three-dimensional appearance to fine art prints, to raise his work to a new level. The grandson of Standard Oil Company magnate John D. Rockefeller, Sr., Nelson Rockefeller made his name in politics. Rockefeller was also an avid collector of Modern art and works from cultures in Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The upcoming Billings auction features a pair of andirons from the Nelson Rockefeller Collection. Cast in gilt bronze and iron, these andirons are Rockefeller-commissioned reproductions of original Alberto Giacometti works.

Leading the Magnificent Jewels auction at Christie’s is the Light of Africa diamond. It weighs 103.49 carats. This massive emerald-cut diamond was cut from a 299.3-carat piece of rough, uncovered in 2021 by Petra Diamonds at the Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa. The stone is the third-largest, high-quality white diamond discovered at the Cullinan mine, which has produced some of the most significant diamonds in history. The Light of Africa diamond has zero imperfections and D color, plus excellent polish and symmetry. It comes with GIA and portrait reports.

The auction will bring 99 carefully selected lots from Cartier, Bulgari, and Tiffany, as well as items from Ann and Gordon Getty’s collection. A ruby and diamond necklace from Cartier is notable. Oval to cushion mixed-cut Burmese rubies hang from the platinum and yellow gold frame decked with round, baguette, and marquise-cut diamonds. Nazmiyal Auctions’ upcoming Antique, Vintage & Modern Rug sale features a variety of Persian carpets and other woven spreads. Among the top lots is an animal design Persian Tabriz rug that measures over 14 feet long. It dates back to the early 20th century during a revival of traditional weaving techniques. Around this time, craftspeople returned to the long history of carpet weaving in the Tabriz region, bringing back the elaborate motifs and patterns that first brought Persian rugs to the global stage. The available antique Tabriz rug arranges prancing animals and a garden border atop a jewel red background. A collection of Serapi carpets are also on offer. Closely related to examples made in the nearby Heriz area, Serapi rugs are particularly known for their high quality and open designs. Turner Auctions to Offer Collection of Grace Garcia, Featuring Ferdinand Waldmuller Painting

Among the top lots is Ferdinand Waldmuller’s oil painting. The piece depicts a man dressed in brown robes staring into a woman’s eyes in awe. Waldmuller was mostly active during the Biedermeier period (1814 – 1848). In 1807, he enrolled at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he trained under Hubert Maurer, a prominent German artist. Following this, Waldmuller studied portraiture in Presburg, Hungary. By the 1820s, Waldmuller was one of the most influential landscape painters in Austria.  

Wilhelm Kray’s work will also appear in the auction. In his early career, Kray worked on landscape and portrait paintings as an apprentice under Julius Schrader and Wilhelm Schirmer. He frequently painted nymphs and mermaids in bright landscapes. The available piece shows a man on a donkey traveling with a woman and a baby. A small town in Hungary, Herend is best known for its porcelain craft traditions. In the mid-19th century, a Herend-based painter was so intrigued by a Chinese porcelain plate with a fish scale pattern that he painted a similar design on a rooster figurine. The fishnet décor went on to become a signature style of Herend porcelain. Today, these hand-painted pieces are prized worldwide for their distinct patterns. One such rare Herend figurine is a key highlight of the upcoming SJ Auctioneers sale. It portrays the dove of peace balanced on a globe with an olive twig in its beak.
