Rare Hand-Painted Herend Figurines and Vintage Toy Train Collectibles Highlight SJ Auctioneers’ Upcoming Sale
Jun 12, 2022 16:00 EDTA small town in Hungary, Herend is best known for its porcelain craft traditions. In the mid-19th century, a Herend-based painter was so intrigued by a Chinese porcelain plate with a fish scale pattern that he painted a similar design on a rooster figurine. The fishnet décor went on to become a signature style of Herend porcelain. Today, these hand-painted pieces are prized worldwide for their distinct patterns. One such rare Herend figurine is a key highlight of the upcoming SJ Auctioneers sale. It portrays the dove of peace balanced on a globe with an olive twig in its beak. The hand-painted porcelain is adorned with a platinum fishnet design. The piece has a Herend Guild Kingdom Classic 2011 mark on it.
An antique 1920s Georg Fisher penny toy also leads the listings. The German tin delivery van measures four inches in length. Manufactured between the late 19th century and early 20th century, such penny toys were low-priced miniature pieces largely produced in Germany. Another noteworthy vintage lot is a Lionel Blue Comet 11-5010-1 toy train collectible with original boxes and accessories. The all-metal 384 steam locomotive two-passenger cars set comprises an eight-piece track circle, 50-watt power supply with digital remote control, and lighted track lock-on and die-cast chassis, among other features.
