Lion and Unicorn’s Upcoming Sale Features a Rare Doulton Lambeth Lord Nelson Character JugJul 13, 2022 09:00 EDT
When Royal Doulton started making Toby jugs featuring well-known personalities, the first character flask featured Lord Nelson to offer tribute to the naval hero. The upcoming Lion and Unicorn event presents a Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug of Admiral Lord Nelson. The available salt-glazed brown and tan jug features the bust of Lord Nelson. It has a ponytail handle and carries detailed medallions on his robe. The jug base bears the quote, “England expects every man to do his duty,” Lord Nelson’s famous line from the Battle of Trafalgar. Among other Doulton stoneware on offer, one highlight is a Royal Doulton Kingsware whiskey flask. The Fagin relief flask depicts the signature dark brown glaze seen on Kingsware pieces. These Charles Noke flasks followed Doulton’s rare manufacturing techniques and finish, which no factory could replicate. They were manufactured for different distillers, with the notable ones being Dewars, featured at the upcoming sale.
The auction showcases a series of Royal Doulton ashtrays, tobacco jars, and match strikers. These articles from the 1920s are sought-after by collectors. After its success with Toby Fillpots, Doulton introduced this series of utility ware. Harry Simeon, a notable Lambeth contributor, designed these ashtrays and other stoneware articles. Also featured is a Santa Claus character jug from Bairstow Manor, a Stoke-on-Trent-based pottery company. The limited-edition jug is hand-painted in bright red and gold. It features Santa holding a bell and a toy bag in each hand. Interested collectors can explore the entire listings and register to bid online on Lion and Unicorn.
