A traditional art of adorning white Chinese porcelain, wucai gained popularity during the Ming dynasty, Jiajing period. The method involves firing the object twice. The first firing is done using underglaze cobalt blue for outline whereas the second is done after overglaze enamels (green, red, and yellow) are applied. A rare wucai porcelain bowl from the Jiajing era is a key highlight of the upcoming Brunk Auctions event. Supported with gilt silver mounts, the exterior is painted with iron red, green, and turquoise enamels depicting pheasant and foliage motifs. It is an 18th-century French Napoleonic portrait of a lady seated in an interior believed to be painted by Ingres, Simon, or Gerard. Juliette Récamier, born Jeanne Françoise Julie Adélaïde Récamier in 1777 Paris, was a beloved French socialite during her time. Numerous paintings and sculptures were modeled after her modest beauty and mannerisms. As a salon leader, she was a host to notable artists and literary and political figures of her society. In popular culture, because she loved reclining, furniture was termed after her as the récamier.

In the early 18th century, a controversy between great minds rocked the world of academic mathematics. Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz argued over who had first invented calculus. Leibniz technically published his mathematical theories first in 1684 with “Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis,” shared in the Acta Eruditorum scientific journal. However, Isaac Newton laid claim to inventing calculus long before then. In 1666, he started developing the concepts of calculus in Method of Fluxions, a collection of writings that remained unpublished for decades.
