Akiba Antiques’ upcoming Modern to Meissen sale will spotlight a life-size ostrich sculpture from contemporary Colombian artist Nano Lopez. The artist grew up in an affluent and supportive family in Bogotá before studying art formally in Madrid, Paris, and the United States. Since the early 2000s, Lopez has gained fame for his playful bronze sculptures depicting animals in bright colors and patterns. The sculpture available in this sale, titled Elizabeth, shows a gleaming ostrich standing on one leg. She rests the other on a large gear. The piece includes many hard-to-spot details, including a tortoise tucked between the ostrich’s feathers and a small bronze pouch carrying art supplies. Collectors of South American art can also consider Jesús Rafael Soto’s Variación Roja y Negra, a serigraph on metal.
Another notable lot in this sale is an Art Nouveau cameo glass lamp from Daum. Dating back to the early 20th century, the piece features a winter theme with frozen trees and a blanket of snow depicted on the shade. The listings feature several Companions by KAWS, luxury watches by Bvlgari, and a selection of antique Japanese cloisonné and enamel pieces.
