150 Lots from a Northern California Estate Go Up for Bid on August 7

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 21, 2021 – Turner Auctions + Appraisals is pleased to present Feelin’ Groovy: Hippie, Counterculture & Music Posters and Memorabilia on August 7, 2021. Featuring 150 lots from a Northern California collector’s estate, the sale features an eclectic range of colorful or psychedelic posters, mostly rock concerts, plus a smaller selection of travel, movie, French, and other offerings. Many posters are multiples; a few are reprints. Highlights include several lots of The Oracle of San Francisco, an underground newspaper published between 1966 and 1968 in Haight-Ashbury; and one lot of the Harbinger, which was published once in 1968 after the Oracle folded.

Music and other posters include Jimi Hendrix Experience, Wavy Gravy in concert with Janis Joplin and other renown musicians, the Allman Brothers, Lightning Hopkins, Jefferson Starship, Artists Rights Today benefit concert, Willie Nelson, the Art of Rock; and groups by Bill Graham Presents. Among the noted poster artists are Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Peter Max, Robert Fried, David Lance Goines, and others. Travel posters include Monaco, Lausanne, and Denmark.

Among the French posters offered are “Ambassadeurs” by Toulouse Lautrec, Diège aperitif, and a Marc Chagall lithograph. Movie posters, some reprinted, include “Gone with the Wind,” “Citizen Kane,” and “Steam Heat.” Rounding out the sale are several other posters (Peter Max self-portrait, Che Guevara – Hasta La Victoria Siempre, 1918 Red Cross, 1st Annual Cosmic Car Show, Emancipation record release, Drink Milk, and others); several photographs; a 1965 Ray Charles concert program; and other memorabilia.

Lot 10: The Allman Brothers Dreams Promotional Poster. Artist: Lorraine Klotz. Date: 1989. Venue: United States. Publisher: Polygram Records. Medium: Offset color lithograph. Dimensions: 36 x 24 in. Rare promotional poster for the release of Dreams in 1989 featuring the psychedelic art of Lorraine Klotz. Condition: A few touches of wear & creasing, single pinhole tear on margin; very good. Estimate $500 – $700.

Lot 7: Che Guevara – Hasta La Victoria Siempre Poster. Printer: La Raza, San Francisco. Medium: color screen print. Dimensions: 28 ½ x 22 ½ in. (framed with glass/metal frame) Condition: good. Estimate $500 – $700.

Lot 84: Harbinger-1968 One-Shot Issue. Venue: Middletown, California. Publisher:
Harbinger. Date: 1968. Description: 24pp. Richly illustrated with colorful psychedelic artwork throughout. 15×11½”, folded wrappers. First Edition. After the Oracle of the City of San Francisco newspaper folded, Oracle staff who had left the city and relocated in Middletown, California, put out this scarce one-shot psychedelic tabloid paper in July 1968, with contributions by Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, Michael Hollingshead, and others. Condition: Age toning, touches of wear and creasing, ink stain in center fold, otherwise good. Estimate $300 – $500.

Lot 6: (2) Artists: Mouse, Griffin, Wilson, Moscoso. Title: Artist Rights Today. Date: 1986 Medium: 2 offset color lithographs. Dimensions: 22 1/2 x 28 ½ in. Uncut sheet of one poster and six handbills for the first Artist Rights Today benefit concert on August 20, 1986. The artwork was a collaboration of Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Wes Wilson (the “Big 5” of psychedelic art). Performers included John Cipollina, James Gurley, Nick Gravenites, and many others. The event was held to raise money for legal expenses in a lawsuit against Chet Helms (Family Dog). On uncoated stock; blank back. Condition: pinholes in sheet corners, surface dirt, colors fresh. Estimate $250 – $350.

Lot 12: Artist: Henri Le Monnier. Title: Diège Apéritif à la Gentiane des Monts d’Auvergne. Date: c. 1930, published by Joseph-Charles, Paris. Medium: Color lithograph. Dimensions: 47 ½ x 31 1/2 in. Condition: good. Estimate $200 – $400.

Lot 26: Stanley Mouse/Jefferson Starship. Artist: Stanley Mouse. Title: Jefferson Starship Greatest Hits. Date: 1990. Medium: Offset color lithograph. Dimensions: 27x 21 1/4 in. Condition: good. Estimate $200 – $300.

Lot 1: (2) Dennis Loren/The Jimi Hendrix Experience Concert. Artist: Dennis Loren. Title: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Free Concert in the Panhandle. Date: 6/25/1967. Venue: Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Medium: 2 Offset color lithographs. Dimensions: 19 ¼ x 14 1/4 in. Condition: good. Estimate $100 – $200.

Lot 77: (4) 1st Annual Cosmic Car Show Posters. Artist: Stanley Mouse. Title: Cosmic Car Show. Date: 8/1967. Medium: 4 offset color lithographs. Dimensions: 21 ¾ x 15 in. Condition: fine. Estimate $200 – $300.

Lot 52: Your boy, Your Red Cross and France poster. Creator: War Council of the American Red Cross. Date: 1918. World War I poster issued by the War Council of the American Red Cross showing Americans how their contributions were being used during the war. Bulletin No. 6, “Your boy, Your Red Cross and France,” touted the many facets the Red Cross provided to troops overseas, including providing canteens with food and drink behind the lines and nurses writing letters home for wounded soldiers. Medium: offset color lithograph Dimensions: 21 x 13 ¾ in. Condition: fine aside from a few creases in the upper right corner. Estimate $200 – $300.

Lot 117: (2) New Horizons Blacklight Posters. Artist: Joseph Parker. Date: 1969. Publisher: Celestial Arts, San Francisco. Printer: Orbit, U.S.A. Medium: 2 offset lithographs. Dimensions: Condition: minor surface dirt, otherwise good. Estimate $200 – $300.

Lot 129: Lightning Hopkins, Kaleidoscope at the Straight Theater. Author: C. Braga. Date: 10/13/1967. Venue: San Francisco. Dimension: 22 ¾ x 16 ¼ in. Description: Original lithograph concert poster. First Printing. Scarce poster for a Lightning Hopkins show at the Straight Theater on Haight Street in San Francisco. “The Straight on the Haight” was a renovated vaudeville theater and from 1966-1969 hosted such acts as The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Country Joe, and many others. Condition: very good. Estimate $150 – $200.

Lot 8: (9) A Run of The Oracle of San Francisco. Venue: San Francisco. Date: 1966-1968. Description: A run of  nine of the underground newspapers published from September 20, 1966, to February 1968 in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. Allen Cohen (1940-2004), the editor during the paper’s most vibrant  period, and Michael Bowen, the art director, were among the founders of the publication. Ron and Jay  Thelin, owners of The Psychedelic Shop at 1535 Haight Street, were the financial backers and sometime  managing editors of the periodical. The Psychedelic experience was meant to generate peace, love, and good  vibrations; the paper did not reflect this, so all involved kept debating and offering ideas until, by issue #4  when Allen Cohen and art director Gabe Katz took hold of the creative reins, the Oracle started to become  the voice of the community. The dynamic color covers began with Number 6, and the different printings may be identified by the variation in the colors. A complete run of this influential underground newspaper, such  as this, with the variant printings, is very rare, and possibly unique to the market. Condition: Some minor  darkening and wear to the paper, as is common, but very good or better; a rare run of this significant and  influential underground newspaper. Lot 5: (7) Art of Rock Promotional Posters. Artist: Wes Wilson. Venue: San Francisco. Publisher: Art Rock/  Backlash Posters Ltd. Date: 1987 Medium: 7 offset color lithographs. Dimensions: 24 ½ x 20 in. Promotional  poster for the book, The Art of Rock, by Paul Grushkin, released in 1987 and containing numerous examples  of Wilson’s work.
