The Connor Brothers | I tried to drown my Sorrows

For the first time in 2020, GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL will also include works by the British artist duo THE CONNOR BROTHERS in the presentation.

The artist duo THE CONNOR BROTHERS are fictional characters who work beyond the canvas, blending truth and artistry to delight and disorient their audience in equal measure. Every interaction with their work plays with emotions, reality and the need for distraction.

They are only superficial people who do not judge by appearances. The true secret of the world is the visible, not the invisible”. The Connor Brothers resist analysis and expectations. Their art was born out of a desire to make each other laugh and discuss their feelings within a culture where admission alone can be a taboo. Through their work and activism, they encourage viewers to laugh or open themselves up to how they perceive the world around them.

The couple broke into the art world when Franklyn and Brendan Connor, escaping a Christian cult that had cut them off from modern society when they were children. After fleeing at the age of 16, they were bombarded with new images and experiences that they found difficult to understand. In their efforts to create order, they processed the new world with the help of sketchbooks, from which a series of paintings would eventually emerge. These pieces were in turn sold in auction houses and galleries around the world.

Their success eventually made history an obstacle, so they revealed themselves but kept their name. Although their identity was revealed, the fictional biography can still be found on their website, alongside the art they are jointly developing as a form of therapy.

While the duo is best known for their Pulp Fiction series – a host of Mills and Boon inspired characters quoting Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw – the couple are not afraid to get involved in real trouble. After working in the jungle refugee camp to build shelter, they launched the Refuchic poster campaign, which held a mirror up to comfortable Westerners, forcing them to rethink their view of the refugees. The artists then performed in Banksy’s Dismaland under the theme of refugees and worked to raise funds for the mental health charity, CALM.

“Artifice is often the best way to represent reality, fiction the best way to challenge conventional notions of what we consider to be ‘the truth’. Most people are happy when they think ‘that’s the way it is’. But in reality it is not. Who knows the truth of anything?”

The British artist duo has long been represented by GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL, also from their Pulp Fiction series.

After the once mysterious duo became famous in 2012 under the pseudonym The Connor Brothers, they are now publicly known as James Golding and Mike Snelle.

The talented artists draw their inspiration from popular and historical culture such as the pulp fiction novels of the 1950s and 1960s, and their distinctive style adorns the artwork with thought-provoking slogans such as “I don’t care what anyone says about me as long as it’s not true” and “I never let the truth stand in the way of a good story.

GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL with locations in Nuremberg and Kitzbuehel focuses on high-quality originals of Pop Art, Street Art and contemporary art by Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Keith Haring, Mr. Brainwash, BAMBI, XOOOOX, Roy Lichtenstein, Julian Opie, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Sean Scully, Robert Longo, KAWS, Tracey Emin, Peter Doig or David Shrigley.

Works by Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff or Russell Young are also available on request.

Exhibitions take place in regular rotation in our centrally located shops. International exhibitions complete the program.
