Sterling Associates announces Nov. 9 Fall Art & Antiques Auction featuring estate discoveries from New Jersey and beyond
Featured: 60+ lots of paintings, portraits, sculptures and editions; bronze mermaid coffee table, regulator clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches; 1821 ship’s log with yacht register
NORWOOD, N.J. – New Jersey’s estate specialists, Sterling Associates, will host a November 9, 2022 art and antiques auction featuring a carefully vetted selection of goods from estates and upscale residences in the Garden State and beyond. The boutique auction comprising 178 lots includes an eclectic array of fine and decorative art, furniture, clocks, watches and fine jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
The auction includes more than 60 lots of art, including several well-executed portraits. One of them is an oil-on-canvas portrait of a gentleman from Dublin, Ireland. The 34- by 39-inch (framed) painting has writing on verso that shows the sitter’s lineage, including possible identification of the man as G.L. McEntee III. It is estimated at $600-$800.
A beautiful nocturnal autumn landscape by Hudson Mindell Kitchell (NY/NJ/RI, 1862-1944) is artist-signed and measures 23 by 19 inches (framed). Its colors are deep green and brown, with a luminescent golden sky, an expression of Kitchell’s leaning toward Tonalism. This attractive painting by an accomplished artist who exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists in the 1920s is estimated at $600-$800.
Several interesting sculptures will be offered, led by a Steven Weinberg (b. 1954-) glass cube sculpture with architectural cutouts and internal decoration having a botanical theme. It measures 9 by 9 by 9 inches and is signed and dated 09060. This intriguing form is expected to sell in the $1,500-$2,000 range.
An Eric Hilton etched glass sculpture measures 18 by 12 by 14 inches. It is signed and dated ’93 and will cross the auction block with an $800-$1,200 estimate.
A dramatic bronze depicting a nude woman reclining is the work of California sculptor Richard MacDonald (b. 1946-). It is signed and dated 2010 and measures 13 by 10 by 5.5 inches. The work is from a very small edition and is marked 6/6. Estimate: $800-$1,200
A very high standard of artistry is obvious in an unusual coffee table whose oval glass top is supported by a three-dimensional mermaid figure. The patinated bronze mermaid has a dreamy expression on her face and lies on her ventral side, with arms behind her as though swimming. Her flipper curves upward and over the glass to create an artistically striking furniture design. Throughout, the mermaid is highly detailed, with scales of graduating size. For those who like statement pieces, this table fits the bill. It is estimated at $500-$700.
Quite a different style of table is entered as lot 93. It is a 19th-century carved-wood production with a white marble and terracotta-color scagliola top adorned with a foliate-and-floral motif. A center table measuring 43 inches in diameter, it is estimated at $1,200-$1,500.
As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, many will have their minds on clocks and watches. For the many who enjoy horological antiques, Sterling Associates is pleased to present several clocks of different styles and eras, from a large Howard & Davis (Boston) hanging regulator clock, $1,500-$2,000; to a George Nelson for Herman Miller Lucite and brass wall clock, $200-$400.
There are eight pocket watches – including a Chinese key-wind silver example with Chinese markings, $300-$400; a Russian 15-jewel key-wind silver “Dinamo” marked for the Russian market, $300-$400; and four wristwatches of unusual geometric form. A GE Hamilton Electric “Pacer” of irregular triangular form carries a $400-$600 estimate.
“In every estate we visit, we find the unexpected,” said Stephen D’Atri, owner of Sterling Associates. “This time we came across a Keystone Packard pressed-steel wrecker truck that appears to be all original. Some antique toy collector is going to be very happy with this discovery.” Its auction estimate is $250-$400.
Another surprising estate find is an 1821 ship’s log and ledger which is offered together with a 1901-1902 Lloyds Yacht Register whose cover bears the name E.L. COMFORT ESQ. The logbook contains hand-inscribed names, places, latitudes and longitudes, making it a fascinating witness to marine history. Lot estimate: $400-$600
