Important Staten Island Estate Will Make Clarke Auction Gallery A Destination July 26

An important Staten Island waterfront estate should bring a good turnout to Clarke Auction Gallery on Sunday, July 26, at 10 am. Preview in the gallery will be July 23-25 from 10 am to 6 pm.

After months of staying home, what could be better than going to an auction? Clarke provides a great selection of fine art, sterling silver, design, decorative arts, jewelry, American furniture and Asian art that should motivate you to get in the car and travel to Larchmont to bid in person..

“After being stuck at home for months, people are excited to go to auctions again and we have an especially great selection this month,” said owner and auctioneer Ronan Clarke, noting masks are required for auction gallery visitors. “The July auction features 200 lots from the Staten Island estate whose owners had a discriminating eye for quality antiques and art, especially bronzes.” 

Starting off the auction will be about 50 artworks in all media and styles. Expected to lead the group are choice paintings by American artists, including a Dickens Chang oil on canvas, “The Waiting Game,” 1987, ($5/7,000); a Johann Berthelsen oil on canvas, “Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street” ($4/6,000), a Frank V. Dumond oil on canvas landscape ($3/5,000) and a Guy Pene du Bois watercolor, crayon, pen, and black ink on paper, “Mannequins” ($3/5,000). Among the fine bronzes is a pair of recumbent lions ($1/1,500), 56 inches long.

Clarke’s fine art specialist William Schwellersaid Chang’s work looks to bridge the gap between Chinese and Western traditions. “This particular work sees Chang working in oils, borrowing from the aesthetic devices of Cubism to create a moody portrait in muted colors. Chang’s work typically sells on the primary market but the secondary market has seen a surge of late, with a painting selling last month in an online sale at Christie’s for $32,500.”

Guy Pène du Bois is another important figure in American pre-war painting. “Pène du Bois often depicted the urban cosmopolitans that made up his milieu,” he said. “He does so in this work to great satirical effect, depicting his subjects as nattily dressed mannequins posed as if conversing at a cocktail party.”

Sterling silver offerings are strong with a large Reed & Barton La Parisienne flatware service ($3/5,000) totalling nearly 300 troy ounces; a Vigueras Mexican serling punch set ($2/3,000) and a five-piece Baltimore Silversmiths tea service ($2/3,000). The service is decorated with ornate repousse scenes. Jewelry will be well represented with gold and diamonds, led by a Piaget “Dancer” 18K gold and diamond ladies watch with diamond accents ($2/3,000).

One can always find pieces here that make a strong design statement and July standouts are a Steinway and Sons Model M, serial # 267270 piano ($3/5,000), a large bronze dolphin form fountain, signed Jerry Joslin, 68 inches tall ($3/5,000) and a Victorian ebonised, inlaid and bronze mounted cabinet with Sevres porcelain plaque ($3/5,000),  61 by 71 by 19 inches. 

Rounding out the auction will be a large Empire style gilt bronze swan form chandelier ($2/3,000); a striking and rare pair of Meiji Japanese bronze burners in relief decoration ($1/1,500) and a Charles and Ray Eames Midcentury rosewood lounge chair and ottoman ($1/$1,500).
