A SELECTION OF AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

Dale Nichols

Best known for his radiant depictions of the American Midwest, Nebraska native Dale Nichols’ The Northern Lights – Alaska captures the haunting, icy glow of the aurora borealis. Lot 1041

Robert Gwathmey
Renowned Social Realist Robert Gwathmey steps away from the images of rural Southern Life with Blue Background. Here, Gwathmey’s bold colors and pre-Pop flatness remain, with a bright blue surrounding an abstracted still life with flowers. Lot 1080

Henri Joseph Harpignies
View to a Watermill, a work on canvas by French artist Henri Joseph Harpignies, shows dashes of his love for the work of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Harpignies, known for his lush landscapes, depicts a scene of rolling green hills and spry, bending trees. Lot 1001

Dario Morales
Colombian artist Dario Morales devoted much of his career to depictions of female nudes, often within everyday settings. From 1977, Woman Taking Her Bath is very much representative of Morales’ subjects, with a great deal of precise detail within the bathroom setting itself. Lot 1101

Eduardo Sivori
One of Argentina’s most prominent painters of the late 19th Century, Eduardo Sivori was part of the Symbolist movement which emanated from Europe. Paisaje is a bright, miniature landscape by Sivori, with deep blues and greens. Lot 1022

James Suzuki
From 1961, Murakabi is one of two paintings by James Suzuki featured in the sale. The Japanese artist arrived in America at just nineteen, and went on to create bold, expressive abstract works, taking cues from Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko. Lot 1087

George LK Morris
An untitled 1940 work on paper by George L.K. Morris is one of two works featured in the sale by the artist. Sometimes referred to as the “Park Avenue Cubist,” Morris shows a marriage of Cubism and lyrical gestures, against a crisp blue background. Lot 1083

Luigi Lucioni
One of two diminutive works on Masonite to be offered, In the Hills by Luigi Lucioni, a beloved Italian-born New York painter. This delightful landscape is representative of Lucioni’s Modern approach to American Realism. Lot 1042

Orville Bulman
One of four paintings featured by Orville Bulman, Ce Quil Ya de Meilleur, depicts one of Bulman’s oft-used subjects – mermaids – in his inimitable, Haitian-inspired style. Lot 1138

Jane Peterson
World traveler Jane Peterson documented many of the far-off locales of her visits in her work, and Hauling in the Nets – Venice is an excellent example. Peterson’s expressive blues pop against the chunky white of the sailing vessel, shimmering on the sepia-brown paper. Lot 1031

Arbit Blatas
One of four works featured by Lithuanian painter and sculptor Arbit Blatas, Restaurant Scene from 1970 is a later work from the youngest of the School of Paris. Pops of color in the floral arrangements throughout the scene balance against Blatas’ heavy impasto. Lot 1121
