Old Master drawings, most of which have not appeared in the art market for at least 40 years, will be available in Sotheby’s upcoming auction. The event features the Old Master drawings collection of Dr. John O’Brien. It will offer 16th– to 18th-century Italian drawings that Dr. John O’Brien has collected discretely for over 50 years. A highlight of the auction is a double-sided sheet by Taddeo Zuccaro. It was created around 1558 or 1559 to decorate the Roman Frangipani Chapel. Zuccaro was known for his vivid imagination and his ability to execute ideas. His work made him one of the most influential draftsmen of his time.
A selection of rare French and Spanish drawings is also a part of the event, including Jusepe de Ribera’s The Lamentation of Christ. A handful of other paintings by Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico, including Discovery of the Tomb of Punchinello, are available as well.
