A printed paper and mahogany cabinet from Austrian-Swedish designer Josef Frank leads the upcoming Stair sale. Designed in 1937, this cabinet is printed with various botanical studies. Frank was a leading figure in the early Swedish Modernism movement, working alongside the likes of Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. He split from his contemporaries in some respects, however, with a willingness to sacrifice the avant-garde in favor of comfort. From the same period is a dressing table and tabouret from Eugène Printz, a Parisian designer who found fame with his Art Deco pieces.
Beyond furniture, a selection of decorative art and household items will also be available. Key lots include a globular tulipwood bowl from Philip Moulthrop, several Spanish Baroque-style rugs, and various porcelain dinner sets. This auction will particularly feature items from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Gutfreund. A Wall Street financier, John Gutfreund’s Fifth Avenue apartment in New York was a fashion destination in the late 20th century. Visit Bidsquare to browse the complete catalog and register to bid.
