Rare Paintings by Aaron Harry Gorson, Omar Rayo Reyes Offered by Concept Gallery in September Sale

Concept Gallery will present an Aaron Harry Gorson painting in its upcoming Fine Art, Modern Design, Silver, Antiques, Prints, Carpets & More sale. Nocturne on the Monongahela River is an undated oil on canvas by Aaron Harry Gorson (Lithuanian/American, 1872 – 1933). The painting is signed lower right and depicts an unusually bright nocturnal view along the Monongahela River. Aaron Harry Gorson was a pioneer industrial landscapist from Lithuania before settling in the United States. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz and the Academie Colarossi in Paris in 1899. The available painting captures his love for urban landscapes, exploring the nocturnal beauty of industrial Pittsburgh through glowing lights that reflect on clouds of smoke and the curving Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. Gorson’s paintings of the mills were highly prized by collectors during the last thirty years of his life, and he is remembered today for his achievements in this genre.

It is signed, titled, and inscribed on canvas reverse. Winner of the 1970 Salón de Artistas Colombianos, Rayo was a renowned painter, sculptor, caricaturist, and plastic artist. He worked with abstract geometry primarily employing black, white, red, and yellow. He was also part of the Op Art movement and focused on geometric art.
