American painter and printmaker Jasper Johns is known for his Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Leo Castelli, an art dealer, describes the moment he discovered Jasper Johns’ art as “… an incredible sight… Something one could not imagine, new and out of the blue.” This visit by Castelli helped Johns land his first solo exhibition. The upcoming Prints & Multiples auction, offered by Sotheby’s, presents several of Johns’ pieces. A 1974 screenprint titled Target is among his early works of flags and concentric circles. The artist repeatedly used these motifs and often incorporated them using plaster relief or encaustic.
Another highlight of the auction is an untitled series of ten woodcut prints in colors by Donald Judd. The 20th-century postwar artist was best known for his large installations. An important feature of this portfolio is Judd’s use of contrasting colors as opposed to his usual monochrome. However, the artist has retained his signature geometric shapes and sharp corners. A print of Roy Lichtenstein’s Sweet Dreams Baby! and a lithograph titled I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art by John Baldessari will also be offered. Screenprints by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joan Miró, Keith Haring, and Jeff Koons are included as well. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Sotheby’s.
