Pop Icon Keith Haring’s Lithograph, KAWS’ Urge Grab Attention at July Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art at Dane Fine Art

Keith Haring (1958 – 1990), an American artist whose Pop art emerged from the New York graffiti subculture of the 1980s, believed that the purpose of art was to critique and influence popular culture. He would draw his iconography on a blank advertising board in train stations or where there was an empty space. His artworks had agency. Haring wanted to communicate through his art about subjects like safe sex, awareness about STDs, racism, suppression, and more. International Youth Year is a hand signed lithograph in colors on paper from the rare edition of 1,000, by Keith Haring. This lithograph is among the leading lots in Dane Fine Art‘s July Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art. It was completed in 1985 and was published by The World Federation of United Nations Associations New York.

Another artist to emerge from the street scene is KAWS. Born Brian Donnelly in 1974, KAWS is an American artist and designer. The artist got his start by defacing billboards and bus stops, introducing characters like Chum and his tag name, KAWS. Creator of Companion and the cross-eyed mask, his works include repeated use of a cast of figurative characters, motifs, and icons initially painted in two dimensions and later realized in three dimensions. Untitled VII (Urge) is an original silkscreen on paper available in the upcoming sale. Completed in 2020, it comes from a rare limited-edition of 250. It is hand signed by the artist. Artwork by KAWS, a blue-chip artist, has attracted the secondary market and is a favorite of many contemporary art collectors.
