Pook & Pook Inc. Presents Three-Day Sale of Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, and More
Sep 25, 2024 09:00 EDTThis upcoming three-day auction from Pook & Pook Inc. features a variety of fine art, decorative art, furniture, collectibles, and more. Among the top lots is an oil canvas painting by American artist Samuel Miller. Most of Miller’s paintings depict children in a rigid, flatly defined manner, often facing forward. Miller’s bold color choices and the details of his surroundings, including the presence of pets and potted flowers, add to the beauty of the composition. This piece of a little girl, dressed appropriately for the 1830s in a striking red dress and patterned stockings, reflects many aspects of Miller’s characteristic style. Additional lots of interest from the first day of the sale include a framed cutwork silhouette of a woman by Auguste Edouart. The artist was a leading silhouette portraitist in the 19th century, with sitters including King Charles X and prominent Scottish figures such as William Dyce and Sir Walter Scott. The available portrait is of a woman standing in a landscape, and holding a letter, inscribed 1842 Philadelphia, 10″ x 7.
This timed sale also includes a polyester resin plaque from Louise Nevelson, titled City Sunscape. Nevelson helped create modern American sculpture through the integration of Cubism and Constructivism. The artist’s use of monochrome coloring concealed the subject’s identity, creating a new dimension of perception. The offered work was published in 1979 by Pace Editions in New York as a painted polyester cast. Bidders can also consider an 18th-century Staffordshire salt-glazed plate, a 1691 Westerwald stoneware jug, and an early U.S. map in ink and watercolor.
