Pablo Picasso, a versatile artist with expertise in a variety of mediums, bears a lasting influence on the art world. From practicing Realism early in his career to pioneering Cubism, Picasso also made significant contributions to Symbolism and Surrealism. Though best known for his paintings, the Spanish artist is also recognized as a ceramicist. Christie’s is celebrating Picasso’s artistry in the upcoming Picasso Ceramics auction. Over 100 lots of his ceramics will be available.
Taureau, which translates to Taurus, is one of the featured lots of the sale. The white earthenware ceramic pitcher shows a bull painted with colored engobe, glaze, and a partial engraving. Another similar item is titled Visage aux Yeux Rieurs, which translates to Face with Laughing Eyes. Besides vases, interested bidders can also view ceramic plates with engravings and colored englobe. Items such as Jacqueline au Chevalet (Jacqueline at the Easel) and Corrida aux Personnages (Corrida of the Characters) are among the available ceramic plates.
