Phillips’ Editions & Works on Paper Sale Features Work by B. J. O. Nordfeldt, Christo

Leading the upcoming Editions & Works on Paper sale from Phillips is a B. J. O. Nordfeldt white-line woodcut print titled Wash Day. A painter and printmaker, Nordfeldt translated portraits, landscapes, and still lifes into striking visual compositions with his energetic and direct brushwork. In addition to Fauvist and Expressionist paintings, the artist was influenced by woodblock prints from Japan and his time living in New Mexico. He painted Cézanne-like images of Native American dances as his first works in New Mexico. Other works by Nordfeldt, such as etchings, lithographs, and paintings, explored the rugged landscape of the Southwest. Bathers is another interesting white-line woodcut work by the artist offered in the auction.

Another lot of interest in this sale are two prints of Christo’s Wrapped Monument to Leonardo, Project for Piazza della Scala, Milan. Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and his creative partner, Jeanne-Claude, joined the New Realist movement that sought to depict ordinary life without exaggerating it.
