Paintings by Polish and Flemish Artists Lead Showplace Antiques’ Upcoming Sale
May 19, 2024 12:00 EDTPolish painter Stanisław Chlebowski was well known for his Oriental-themed works. After his initial education in the arts, he pursued a six-year scholarship under the aegis of French Orientalist Jean-Léon Gérôme. From 1864 to 1876, Chlebowski resided in Constantinople, where he was commissioned as the master artist during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. The upcoming Showplace Antiques sale will feature Standing Bashi-Bazouk, an Oriental oil on canvas painting by Chlebowski. It is signed and dated lower right. A bashi-bazouk in Ottoman roughly means “disorderly” and the one who was raised as an irregular soldier during war. Another notable oil on canvas painting in the catalog, titled Family Portrait, is attributed to François-Joseph Kinson. The neoclassical painting portrays a mother and her three children. The Flemish artist was favored by rich and illustrious clients and is best remembered for his portraits of sophisticated women.
A rare patinated bronze sculpture of William Shakespeare by Frederick William MacMonnies also leads the listings. It features a “Gruet E. Jeune, Paris, France” foundry mark on the reverse side of the base.
