The upcoming Sotheby’s auction will offer a painting by Jacob van Loo, a prominent artist from the Dutch Golden Age. Titled Danaë, the work captures a Greek myth of a princess locked in a brass room. This work shows the princess lying on her navy blue bed, surrounded by gold coins. Her maidservant stands beside her. Van Loo explored this myth in great depth during his career.
This auction also showcases artists such as Francesco Albani, François-Xavier Fabre, Caspar Netscher, and Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld. Albani’s available unframed painting shows Venus, a Roman goddess, surrounded by cherubs. They are helping her prepare for the day, combing her hair and offering mirrors and pearl necklaces. Albani was an artist from Italy’s Baroque period, trained in Annibale Carracci’s studio. For more information on these lots, visit Sotheby’s.
